House Speaker Contest

And another nomination for Jordan.

Meet the new vote, same as the old vote.

i’m kevin the 8th, i am i am…

here we go again.

Now THAT would be funny.

I think it was Brendan Buck (former Boehner an Ryan aide) on MSNBC that just predicted McCarthy has likely no path to the Speakership now, and he predicted a year from now that he won’t even be a member of the House (meaning he’ll resign sometime over the next year).

Jordan’s got 5 again

Just got another for a total of 6.

It was David Jolly, ex-GOPer from FL.

I noticed Blumenauer (D-OR) didn’t vote. Any other abstentions?

It’s not an abstention, he was probably just in the can. They’ll call him again at the end of the roll call.

mccarthy just lost another moc to jordan, jordan may get 20 this time. mccarthy out on the 3rd round.

Gotcha, thanks!

This whole thing is vaguely reminiscent of a national leadership convention in Canada (at least how they used to be, before internet voting by members)

In this case though, the opposition had no say in who the party chose as their leader. The party members did though.

A big convention was held - Leadership candidates had lined up their votes beforehand as much as they could. During the convention, after the first vote, rarely was there anyone with a solid majority. Horse trading then took place, lots of meetings between candidate representatives. Deals were struck. Candidates who were low down in the voting totals would pledge their member’s votes to a particular other candidate. Repeat for 2nd vote. Repeat again as necessary. Eventually someone would come out on top. Some party rules dropped the lowest one or two vote getters in order to speed up the process.

One name I haven’t seen is Alan Frumin. I don’t know how his health is, but he’s a highly qualified Republican (edit: I may be wrong about that) — at least, Trent Lott found him acceptable — who should be much more acceptable to every Democratic member than anyone that can get to 218 with GOP votes only.

As forJeffries, voting for him is, pure and simple, throwing away your vote.

“i am not sympathetic to mccarthy’s humiliation, but i am intrigued by it.” nicole wallace.

Yes, but in that case you had multiple different factions who were trying to woo the smaller groups into their consensus. In this case you just have a 2% of one of two factions just being dicks for the sake of being dicks.

Since the Speaker is 3rd in presidential sucession, wouldn’t they have to be? What happens if a naturalized citize is elected speaker and the president and VP are, say, assassinated?

Might even represent a step in the right direction of good governance.

In that case, the speaker would be skipped in order of succession. We’ve had people like Kissinger or Madeline Albright in the line of succession, so this is not new.

Only in the sense that voting for a losing candidate is always “throwing away your vote,” which is a silly idea. If I lived in Utah, would a vote for Biden have been “throwing away my vote”?

Voting for Jeffries demonstrates that the Democratic caucus is united. It demonstrates that the leaders can move votes. It contrasts to the noodle salad comprising the Republican party.

Found it:

The Presidential Succession Act refers specifically to officers beyond the vice president acting as president rather than becoming president when filling a vacancy. The Cabinet has 15 members, of which the secretary of state is first in line; the other Cabinet secretaries follow in the order of when their departments (or the department of which their department is the successor) were created. Those heads of department who are constitutionally not “eligible to the Office of President” are disqualified from assuming the powers and duties of the president through succession, and skipped to the next in line.
