For sheer schadenfreude’s sake, I really hope this next one fails.
Do you know where your towel is?
McCarthy is an incredibly bad and insane political actor, and people significantly more extreme than him got major concessions from him before the Republicans took control of the House. Given the six years we’ve all just had, your reading doesn’t strike you as just a bit optimistic about what this House is going to do?
I know you’re kind of joking but Gaetz didn’t promise shit. He’s voting No
I was mostly trying to gently make the point that this isn’t the thread for that discussion.
We don’t know how governing is going to look if/when McCarthy gets the gavel. This thread is to discuss his efforts to get the gavel, not to speculate beyond that point.
Reporting is that some of the holdouts will vote present. They are saying boebert is in that mix.
“Present” as in “gift”. I wonder what she got. Probably more than a scented candle.
Point taken
Given moderator suggestion this may be better to continue in a thread to be named later, presumptively after a vote tonight delivers what is advertised without surprise.
I’ll only comment that my belief is not based on McCarthy’s extremism but the weakness of his position and the unprecedented power the fewest most extreme of the extreme will have to make all sorts of blustery theatrics as the actions of the GOP controlled House.
I guess Republicans do negotiate with terrorists.
A thread about the concessions and promises does exist that may be the place for how viable or credible they are and what happens in the attempt to implement them?: https://boards.straightdope.com/t/concerning-the-mccarthy-concessions-to-become-house-speaker/
Good deal. That’s a perfect thread for it.
It’s really a different subject than reneging on promises or just the promises alone. The subject is really what does the House under McCarthy look like now, and includes much more than discussion about concessions.
I thought the OP covered that with this part of his starting post:
What is/are the likely result(s) if he reneges on any/all of them if he takes office?
If you don’t think that’s sufficient and you want to expand the scope further, no problem opening another thread. At the moment, I’m just trying to keep this one on topic and manageable.
Ask @Hoopy_Frood.
Unfortunately for her, McCarthy was speaking German.
“I was saying, ‘The Boebert, The.’”
Here we go again
