I have a rubber tree that is about to touch the ceiling. It is just straight up, with no branches. I am afraid just lopping the top off and rooting it is going to look funny, but it is all I can think of. Any ideas?
Also, I have a bright yellow mushroom that keeps popping up in the soil of another rubber tree. Any thoughts on how to get rid of them?
You can buy anti-fungal soap spray at any garden home center. I use it on our house plants. Also we have cats so we have rocks in most of our pots, and that can keep the mushrooms from growing as well.
As for the rubber plant. I have had the same problem and instead of lopping off the top and rooting it you can take a more passive approach that is both fun to watch and easy to do.
Buy some spanish moss from the garden/home center, and grab some saran wrap and some masking tape.
Slice a small notch in the stalk of the rubber plant - at an appropriate height. Dampen the moss and pack it around your slice. Wrap it in the saran wrap and masking tape off the ends so as not to allow air to get in. Leave it for 2 to 3 weeks. After that time, open your little bundle up and you’ll see a bunch of roots have formed. Cut the root bundle in half and plant the top in wet soil, and the other lopped off half will soon grow branches and leaf out. It its splendid to watch and after you cut it it grows quite quickly. The lopped off half that is.
