How about a gender indicator?

Apologies if this has been broached before, but how about a gender indicator? Nothing fancy, maybe just a “M” or “F” under location in the profile. Is that an option with the software you guys are using?

It seems there’s a lot of incorrect pronoun usage that gets corrected on the boards.

Thoughts?

I like the idea.

Hey Scruloose, a/s/l?

Better yet, we can just start speaking of ourselves in the third person. He thinks that’s a pretty good idea, doesnt he?

I like the idea, but might it not invite protest from our trans and/or intersexed members?

It’s a good idea, though it should be an option to not say. Earlier today, I read Tengu’s thread about poster who mis-guessed Tengu’s gender.

I’ve “been here since before the beginning,” but I still get the occasional post from someone who doesn’t know if I’m male or female. I’m male, by the way.

I think it’d be a nice option, but I definitely wouldn’t make it mandatory.

Much like having an age indicator, I feel it could cause the more unsavory among us to declare that “So and so couldn’t POSSIBLY understand, because he’s male/15/whatever”

Like we don’t get enough of that dismissive attitude with the location field.

Well, it would have to be optional.

I don’t think I’d fill it in, simply because I’m indifferent and don’t think its important. If someone boggles the pronoun I don’t particularly worry. If it’s important to the thread, it comes out in discussion anyway.

You know, in my day, dropping your pants was indicator enough…

In my day, at least one classmate thought so too.

Oh, I like that idea too.

Chiming in with Evil Overlord Eats_Crayons: Dopers who want their gender known have opportunities to do so. And others may, y’know, like being gender-anonymous, just saying.

Maybe it could be subtle, like changing the color of the little divider line that follows your post.

Because as everybody who has played “Life” knows, pink is for girls, blue is for boys. :stuck_out_tongue:

Me, I’m a boy who enjoys wearing pink… ON MY JOCK! Ha ha ha ha! (Holds up hand for a high-five.)
… nothing, huh?

Buncha savages in this board.

Nothing is stopping you folks from placing a tag at the beginning or ending of your location:

(male) Tucson, AZ
Atlantic City, NJ (Female)
UC Berkley {confused}

That’s a good suggestion, tomndebb. Am I addressing the “tom” or the “debb?”

i think it best that posts should be considered in their own weight, regardless of sex/sexual orientation/nationality/ethnicity/their thoughts on invisible pink unicorns.

Count another one in the “non-mandatory” thing, but an available option.

Yeah, it’ll be an option. But if you can’t figure it out from the post nor can figure it out from previous posts–if a charter member–than the heck with ya.

Sometimes anomynity is a good thing, and I’ll support it.

A certain amount of anonyminity is a good thing on these boards.

I’m all for it, if only in order to see the hilarity that should ensue when some of our more creative members make up their own gender definitions…

(I mean, it would be a free-text field, like the “Location” field… right? Ours to ignore, fill in matter-of-factly, or use for personal expression)

Dani

Well, I get gender confused all the time. But hey, it adds a bit of spice, you know? Some funny lines don’t work that well with a male speaker. :stuck_out_tongue:

You mean like, vagina?
