I used to love discount theaters as a kid in Queens, New York- the Cinemart in Forest Hills was a great place for a cheap date, as was the (seedier) Arion in Middle Village. But those theaters disappeared ages ago.
There WERE still discount theaters here in Austin, just a decade ago, and I used to go to them all the time… but they’re all history, now.
There’s one near us that we go to frequently. And they serve pub food (which is pretty good) and wine and beer during the movie, which is awesome topped with awesomesauce.
There’s another theater nearby (that charges full price and such) that serves booze and food for select movies (usually the biggies that just opened). It’s where we saw The Hunger Games. More spendy than the first, but still pretty awesome.
There was a big $1 theater in North Little Rock on Mccain Drive. They had six or maybe 8 screens? Last time I went it was up to $2 or $3
I’m not sure if its still open. I’ll have to drive by and see next time I’m over that way.
Wow. I didn’t realize how lucky I was.
Yes, I realized that having three in my general area makes me pretty lucky. I am surprised, though, at the number of “we don’t have one” responses. Bummer.
When I was a university student in Saskatoon, I used to like cheap(ish) movie theatres; the Rainbow Cinema cost around $2 and I think Place Riel Theatre (at the university) cost around $4 for a matinee. I seem to recall the screens at the Rainbow were about the size of a postage stamp, though. Place Riel was good though; for one thing, the Chinese student’s association used to regularly import action flicks from Hong Kong.
Nowadays, I live in Toronto and cheap(ish) movies cost more like $7.50 and I can buy discounted movie ticket vouchers through work for about the same price (and I can watch them on a bigger screen in a nicer theatre, to boot).
Mine closed here a couple years ago. I used to go see horror and action movies there. Those kind of movies aren’t the same in your well lit living room. My dream job is to open up a theatre that shows old movies. Wouldn’t you love to be able to see jaws or caddyshack on the big screen one more time.
In my area I can think of at least 3 that went out of business. I think there is only 1 remaining.
