I’m being strict and only counting bands/musicians I listened to/bought an album from during high school, and leaving out older people whose 60s-70s output was all I listened to (e.g. Pink Floyd, Beatles, Dylan)
Still crackin: Pixies (sans Kim, but they’re recording original stuff and touring and things); Mike Watt (in various incarnations); oddly enough, Body Count; Beck; Dead Milkmen (according to a poster above)
Gone busto: Leonard Cohen, The Replacements, Beastie Boys (sniff); Ween
Who cares: Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam and all those beflanneled bastards
Van Der Graaf Generator split and reformed, and are still (pandemic permitting) touring and producing new material. And lead singer Peter Hammill has released god knows how many albums in the meantime. Curved Air continue to play and record but it’s mainly a vehicle for singer Sonya Kristina although other original members play guest spots, etc. from time to time. The Grateful Dead broke up after Jerry’s death but the other members still tour under various names and combinations, often playing Dead songs in their sets.
Two of the original 4 members of Redbone have died but Pat Vegas apparently still tours under the name.
Most of the other groiups have already been mentioned upthread.
I watched him signing shirts at a merch table in the mid-Eighties. He was surprisingly amiable, even asking fans if they wanted their shirts signed “John Lydon” or “Johnny Rotten”. When I see him saying stupid shit (like lecturing Tommy Ramone about “real punk”) I’m never sure if he’s a bona fide asshole or if it’s just an act.
Class of '72, and a lot of overlap here. One band from my HS era that I don’t think has been mentioned is CSN&Y, who are all still alive but not performing together. Tull has been mentioned in this thread. You mentioned the Mothers, and of course Zappa’s long since ridden off on his pygmy pony into the dawn of Montana. I don’t think Spirit has been mentioned, but Randy California died in 1997.
Bob Dylan has managed to outlive practically everyone from that era, and he came out with an album of new songs about a year ago, which I haven’t heard any of yet. Weird to think that all of his collaborators in the Wilburys have kicked the bucket except for Jeff Lynne.
Just to add to the weird, the king of the punks married a publishing heiress 13 years older than him. Been married for 41 years. And now acts as her carer, as she suffers from Alzheimers.
There’s no figuring him out. His own man, I guess.
Prince, deceased. However, Wendy and Lisa are still working…: )
The Suburbs! Not all- original lineup but they are playing a lot for a bunch of “old guys”. Chan Poling even made a Glensheen musical with Jeffrey Hatcher:
I also nominate Iggy Pop as immortal as Keith Richards. The guy takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
I remember making a post here about the immortality of Keef, Iggy and Lemmy around ten years ago . Now that Lemmy’s long gone, I hope the best for the other two guys… Naaaaah, they’re both made of leather, they will always live!
The bands and artists I was into have been mentioned except Don McLean. I stopped following him around the time I graduated, but for awhile there, I thought he was great. Turns out he’s a narcissistic jerk who allegedly (He plead guilty but claimed he wasn’t.) abused his daughter and now-ex-wife and claims to have found true love with a vapid publicity hound 50 years younger than he is. Classy guy. Still touring at 75.
