As I mentioned in another thread, that article is problematic. The author cited two unnamed witnesses. Two named witnesses, Mark Meadows and Kash Patel, released statements that Trump never made these comments.
While it would be easy to believe the story, there’s not solid enough evidence to accept it at face value. Add in that the Guillen family feels this is abusing the memory of Vanessa Guillen for politics, I’m inclined to drop it.
Oh, I’m sorry to tell you there’s a heap of this cohort who’d think that if this were true(*) the family must have padded the bill and good on him for not paying. Because we have as large a proportion of a-holes as the general population.
(* I mean, sure, we can totally see him off-handedly saying “we’ll pay for it” and then later saying “like hell we’re paying that much for this” since it’s his usual M.O. )
Hardly. Funerals are damn expensive. Now, yes, they could have gone for a no frills, certainly, maybe $10K , maybe even less. But trump said he’d pay for it. They likely went for a nicer, fancier funeral, not a no-frills one. $30K for a funeral does not- in any way shape or form- require “padding” by the grieving family. Kinda a racist point to make accusing a grieving Hispanic family of trying to cheat trump- when we know, for sure, who the convicted fraudster is here.
He barely even had the energy then. He whipped up an angry mob to attack the Capitol in his name and then went home and watched it on TV. Imagine how differently things might have turned out if he had actually gone to the Capitol with his followers and given a speech from the occupied Senate chamber.
All he needs to do on Nov 6 is say “Hey minion: start the steal project.” None of @Aeschines scary autonomy is required of the minions themselves; they’ve been following orders in working on this for 3 years now and they’re about to follow one last order to make it so.
Even in his mightily diminished state he can probably muster the energy to utter 6 words. Especially since they’re traitorous words and he lurves him some traitorism.
Not so great. But they had not had 4 years to work on it by that point. It never got to the SCOTUS< but this time with a hard-right SCOTUD I could imagine a different result.
The solution of course is for Harris to win so utterly totally that bitching about miscounts, fraudulent voters, etc., doesn’t even approach passing the laugh test. That’s how we avoid a second steal attempt.
I do not predict that here. I do predict that there will be a second steal attempt regardless of whether it is close.
Election related violence is common around the world. Reversing election results is far less likely than the attempt to do so. Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro has tried hard to steal elections and failed.
It is almost impossible to steal an election when you do not have the power of incumbency.
Full Title: McConnell says ‘MAGA movement is completely wrong’ and Reagan ‘wouldn’t recognize’ Trump’s GOP
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a scathing assessment of the modern Republican Party in an upcoming biography, saying the “MAGA movement is completely wrong” and that Ronald Reagan “wouldn’t recognize” the party today.
“I think Trump was the biggest factor in changing the Republican Party from what Ronald Reagan viewed and he wouldn’t recognize today,” McConnell told the Associated Press’ Michael Tackett for the upcoming biography “The Price of Power” obtained by CNN ahead of its release.
McConnell added that the former president has “done a lot of damage to our party’s image and our ability to compete.”
I am glad he is saying this but still…fuck McConnell. He has done more to make the country a train wreck than most people. That he’d say this though suggests even he thinks MAGA is too much. Kinda telling.
Of how horrible of a person he is. He hasn’t suddenly realized this. He’s know it all along. And yet he’s knelt, kissed the ring (and other round things), and used his skills to enable it. Scum.
It’s funny (but not haha-funny) how these POS cowards think they’re going to have any kind of legacy. The Old Crow is going down in the history books as a traitor and a failure.
That was my reaction as well. I typically try to bite my tongue and simply congratulate MAGA adherents who come in from the cold, but Moscow Mitch knew what he was doing and like a coward turned his back on his best opportunity to rid the party of Trump. Fuck Mitch.
Yep. Fuck Mitch McConnell. Him and Gingrich are probably the two people most responsible for laying the groundwork that allowed Trump to take over the Republican party. As @Odesio notes above, I’m also usually much more forgiving when it comes to rank and file Maga idiots who finally see the light. These people have been with us since the founding of the country, and they are not going away even after Trump dies. At the risk of sounding needlessly understanding, we’re going to have to find a way to live with them again at some point, even if that means having to shove the Civil Rights movement down there throats again for the second time. McConnell is probably the worst offender regarding realpolitik since Kissinger. But, even if he really means this, with everything he has said and done since the 80s, it just comes off as insanely cynical.
Deathbed conversions may work on God. They don’t work on me.
Yeah; the Old Guard Republican leadership basically made a deal with the devil when they decided to pander to the far-right crazies in return for votes, and it turned out as well for them as deals with the devil usually do. Now they’ve been sidelined and the MAGA lunatics are running around wearing the GOP like a skinned husk.
Probably sad he didn’t bother to even look at either of the two impeachment packages the House dropped on his desk. Had the senate convicted, Trump would not be stinking up any legacy he had.
Spectacular hypocrisy on his part, as a vile, critical enabler of that fucking man and his movement.
It makes me wonder if he is worried about a significant GOP loss and some sort of Nuremberg-like moment and denazification process to follow (btw I know nothing of that nature is a remote possibility)
Yeah, but as the phrase goes with the Right “every accusation is a confession”; murderously purging all dissidents is what they want to do, so naturally it’s what they think the Democrats want to do.
