How can Donald Trump win at this point?

Those are not even the words found on the assessment.

They were simply things he saw in front of him at the time he was speaking.

I don’t mean to be mean (or worse, Trumpian mean), but has anyone here noticed that RFK Jr. looks like a reanimated corpse?

But even if he slinks back into his grave, I don’t think an endorsement of Trump will really work that way. One big factor is that such an endorsement will be an admission of what we here have known all along: that RFK Jr.'s campaign was a grift in support of Trump from the start. That’s likely to piss off a percentage of RFK Jr. voters and backfire, either causing them to sit out the election or go over to Harris.

Time and polls will tell.

Here’s a link to those polls:

Your post makes total sense, but I guess it comes down to splitting hairs on whether the word “evil” is appropriate for such people as you describe. If “selfish, unempathetic assholes” is better, I’m fine with that.

If. Unless if the other half votes Harris. Then not such a big deal.

Meanwhile the polling looks like they are mostly split but reality? My WAG is that these are people who would not vote in the end in any case and if not for RFK they are less likely to bother endorsement or not.

I hate to admit this, but I have a sister who is an RFK supporter. She’s anti-vax, hence her support.

But she knows that a vote for RFK is a throwaway to a lost cause. If she votes, she will most certainly vote for Harris. I cannot say if she will cast a ballot, however.

Right.

And poll responses aren’t votes, anyway. RFK Jr was a handy excuse of a candidate for people who didn’t want to tell a poll who they really supported. Or else that they didn’t give a whit.

Or to lodge a “protest” choice.

Some people say there are different kinds of intelligence (although others see this as feel good nonsense). Verbal intelligence, academic intelligence, mating intelligence, practical skills, general intelligence, relationship intelligence (people skills), emotional intelligence, social intelligence.

Probably Trump has people skills and social intelligence.

Well I think it might have started as just a grift for cash. Or he could be egotistical enough to actually have thought he could win.

It seems natural to me he’d slither to Trump:

  1. The Democratic Party rejected him.
  2. He’s into anti-vaccine quackery, which is Republican-sided.
  3. There is a chance Trump would be stupid enough to award him a cabinet post.

Regardless of whether it can be called “science” or not, there is a need to explain why some people are better than others at a myriad of tasks. There are a lot of people who don’t seem particularly high-IQ who nevertheless have a special talent or knack for something.

I’m pretty darned liberal, and about as critical of Chump and his followers as anyone. But I find myself trying to figure out how to avoid mentally writing off 1/3-1/2 of my fellow voters - including a couple of friends/family with whom I enjoy socializing - as “evil” or “assholes.” Both of those terms - in my mind - imply some degree of intention. Whereas I think many of those people are more ignorant, or oblivious to their preferred status and others’ less favored status.

I guess it comes down to the old argument - if someone harms you, how much does in matter whether they did it intentionally or negligently/unthinkingly? And I often harken to the old saw, “Do not attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance/incompetence.”

I agree again, and I say they’re “stupid or evil” because it’s not just because they’re evil.

We’re not talking about Mitt Romney here, a guy whose policies we may not like but who is, at the end of the day, a normalish guy.

Trump is so fucking outrageous and unacceptable that, if people support him, then one may conclude that those people have something wrong with them.

About the best excuse someone could have is to say, “I don’t approve of Trump’s behavior, but I want Republicans to win, and I think they will rein in his excesses.” That’s about the smartest way to be stupid about him. Most voters don’t take that tack and actively make excuses for him instead. Some make excuses but internally celebrate his vices. Some don’t even bother to make excuses.

We wondered how so many Germans could support the Nazis. Now we know. It’s a terrible truth about human nature, but there it is.

Not mutually exclusive. They do like what they see and hear, but they are being lied to, and they have bought the narrative that the mainstream media is fake news, which is ironic because emails prove Fox news commenters do lie.

They may have the option to change the channel, but just like you don’t want to listen to the Faux News yammerheads eviscerating the truth, they don’t want to hear the “liberal lies” of mainstream news. But because Fox has been at it so long, it’s created an information bubble. Within that bubble they can present a distorted view of reality. With that distorted view, the motives and actions of others are distorted until the messaging they hear makes sense.

The messaging on the economy is twisted enough to justify the feeling that things are worse now. And it’s really true that prices are higher and wages haven’t kept up.

Yes, that is true.

It’s not that they want an authoritarian state per se. They want the restoration of their privilege, and they want their values forced on everyone. Their religion, their version, their beliefs about sex and gender and identity. They think a little authoritarian force is fine a long as it’s aimed at someone else. They don’t understand the authoritarian government will come for them because they believe all the right ways. Doesn’t matter, the nature of authoritarianism is that it will eventually come for them.

Or what he said.

Nobody is tuning in to Fox to get their facts straight.
They are tuning in to Fox to get their spin straight.
They don’t care about the facts.

You can’t perpetually lie to people and have them not find out. People are not that dumb, they know what they are getting. Fox’s audience likes what they are getting. They want the world presented to them through a “fair and balanced” lens.

30% is not even close to half. Some people vote for anyone with a R next to their name. Some people are brainwashed by Faux and Conservative Talk radio. Yes, trump has a solid cadre of racists and right wing Christians. But there are more like the 30%.

He is a cunning conman whose cons have finally caught up with him.

Yep, but they keep trying, they are getting desperate.

No. Only about 15% of Americans are that level of Right wing evangelicals. But he also has fools and bigots. He has a hard core 30% of voters, not all are Christians.

It doesnt matter. A Black man proposed it.

Well, it certainly used to be. Now?

Only about 15% of American want to ban abortion. This has been made clear in referendum after referendum. About 60% of American want some limits on Abortion. And it isnt illegal immigration- those coming in from Canada are cool- it is BROWN immigration, illegal or legal.

There are- sadly- some progressive liberals who are also anti vaccine. Both sides have some nut jobs.

Uh, I have MAGA relatives. They definitely go to Fox for facts, don’t listen to other media because the don’t believe it.

One uncle is a sponge for all the MAGA talking points. I went to a reunion a while back and he was showing off this letter to the newspaper about how Trump was being persecuted blah blah blah. My mom saw what it was and just directly responded she doesn’t believe any of that and refused to engage him on it. Talk about family stuff, not the delusional politics.

I mean, unless your point is that they are lies, i.e. spin. But they don’t necessarily think it that way. It’s the mainstream media that lies. Or at least is hopelessly biased in what they cover and how they cover it, which is essentially the same thing.

Actually when he first said those words they were not memorized. He was being interviewed on camera after his cognitive test, and he didn’t use the words from the test. He just looked at what was in front of him. A person, a man, a woman, and a camera. He hesitated for a second before adding TV…which was what he was on (in his mind).

It doesn’t mean jack shit it the rest of the populace that just want a lessening of abortion rights are like “good cops”-not actively getting in the way, but also not doing anything to stop it.
