How can I clean up after leaky batteries?

I have a situation with a piece of photographic equipment I own. The thing is one (maybe 2) of it’s batteries has leaked alkaline all over the interior of the compartment. What’s worse is that it has also seeped to the external parts of the piece of equipment. I’m looking for advice on how to safely clean the dried up toxic gook that is now all over. Any help with this matter, and advice on preventing future occurrences would be greatly appreciated.

The equipment, for those who care to know such things, is a Nikon MD12 power winder & a Nikon FM2 35mm SLR that it’s attached to. The batteries were Duracell AA household alkaline. The MD12 takes 8 of these.
