How can I connect to my computer remotely?

Ok here is the scenerio

I have a computer at home on a cable modem with a dynamic IP that doesn’t change much

I want to either take it over from work or access files on in.

The home system is running NT Server and work is running NT Workstation. At work they have the port that Telnet uses closed so I can’t run a Telnet server at home and Telnet in unless I can change it to a non-standard port however my ISP does not allow us to run servers on their system.

I tried putting Timbuktu on the home system because I have Timbuktu on my workstation at work but I was unable to connect to that also.

I had someone not at work try to connect to my system and they could so I know the Timnuktu port is being blocked by the firewall at work.

Easiest way is to get a cheap personal FTP server, like Serv-U. I used to run this when I was on ethernet. Since you have dynamic IP, you’d just need to check your IP prior to leaving, then log into that IP through your FTP program at work. Just set up a master account to access all your files.

Check out VNC, a free, open-source remote control application developed by AT&T Labs.

Since you’re running NT Server, you should also consider Windows Terminal Server – it’s somewhat faster than VNC.

For file access, just install the FTP server from IIS4 on your NT Server box; you may have to use a nonstandard port, as cable ISPs seem to hate the idea of their customers running any kind of server.

I dig PC Anywhere. I keep a connection open from my office PC to my home network pretty much all day. I dunno if you’ll have problems with the firewall blocking it or not, though.
