Well, sort of. Last month my beloved 91 CRX was brutally murdered by a Ford Escort. The good news is that no one was injured and the other driver was at fault, but I’m heartbroken. I loved that car and planned to keep it for a long time. I’ve since purchased a very pretty Toyota that I’m sure I’ll grow to appreciate, but oh I miss my litte street fighter!
I had the poor little carcass towed to my house, but what do I do with it now? I would feel a lot better if I could give it to a CRX enthusiast who could use it for parts or maybe even repair it, but I’m not sure how to make contact. There is no local club that I know of. I’m thinking about posting a message at an online group but I’m afraid that might be like my local Freecycle group, where 50 people jump at the offer then change their minds or never follow through.
I hate the idea of sending my little car to the shredder if there is a chance for rebirth. Does anyone have advice?
If you’re looking to get it to an enthusiast, you might try eBay Motors. There are people out there looking for parts cars. As a bonus, you’d get some money too. And if the money isn’t really necessary, you can sell it for dirt cheap and someone will definitely buy it.
I was going to suggest this. My local high school has an auto shop class and I donated an old car of mine there after it went kerblewy - got a tax deduction for it, too (although I don’t claim those, for the most part). They even arranged to have it towed - I guess they have a deal going with a local tow shop.
When my car committed suicide (shot a rod trhough the engine block), I donated it to Children’s Hospital. Consider making your car a charitable donation, as it does some good in the world and gets you a tax deduction. Here’s how it works:
[ul]* They tow your car for you.
You sign over the title.
They auction it off.
They send you formal documentation of the amount your car sold for. Use this for tax purposes.
The proceeds of the sale go the benefitting charity[/ul]
There are many charities that use this model – veterans, hospitals, Make-A-Wish, etc.

Is this becoming more and more common lately? That’s how my car and the tashaboy’s car all died (within a month of each other) - and we were pretty good at taking care of the engines. Mine actually shot a rod through the engine and the oil pan and caught on fire. Fun times. Anyway, I had heard of this problem before, and suddenly I know more than ten people who have had it happen to them in cars from the 90’s, within the past six months.

The radiator is smashed, but the rest of the engine seems ok. After the accident I was able to start it and move it off the street.
Thanks to all. I didn’t think about the local schools. They have all sorts of magnet programs. I’ill contact the central office tomorrow and see what they say.
Me too, tashabot! And on a bridge with no shoulders! Good times indeed. I don’t know of anyone else who this has happened to. What kind of car were you driving? Mine was a 1999 Saturn SL2.
[semi-hijack]If you’re going to get some money of the at-fault-guy’s insurance, won’t his insurance company want the car? I don’t think they usually let you claim compensation for a written-off car and also keep the smashed vehicle - presumably they’d want to sell it themselves to get some of their money back. But I could be wrong.
Don’t want to dampen your recycling enthusiasm, just checking you won’t lose the insurance money or get in trouble. If you haven’t already found it, this site among others may find your car useful, among others - googling “Honda CRX” brought up some similar links.
