How can I find out the company behind a charge on my credit card?

Not that it really helps at this point, but a friend of mine worked in the disputes department for a Visa call centre, and it was downright scary what information she had access to on the merchant, the card holder and their entire credit/banking history (at least with that bank). If you deal with the card issuer again, ask around to see if you can get a disputes manager to have a look at it - I’d be really surprised that they couldn’t find out the location of the merchant. Whether or not they’d tell you at this point is a whole other question!

The actual, true, and factual answer is that the police aren’t going to try to find the person with information provided by you. If you provide them with info they still won’t be able to act upon it due to the source of the information. They will not be able to get a warrant based upon information provided by you. Why?, because too many people try to settle personal relationship problems by using the police.

IF the police were to apprehend him for another crime, and can connect him to your crime, they will be able to add your crime to the list of charges.

Sorry, that’s the way it does work. You are wasting your time and the police are humoring you.

Really? So if I find a video with the guy and his license plate, the police will be forced to ignore it? They won’t be able to go to the store and view the video themselves and use it as evidence? The mere fact that I’ve viewed it means it’s useless?

Please stop derailing this thread about what the police will or won’t do. I don’t care. All I want is to find the store. If you can help me find it, great. If not, please leave.

If the total amount all merchants are out is $2000, no cop or credit card company will waste their time to pursue it. It’s petty cash; part of doing business; expected loss and planned for in their business model.

Now tack a few zeros on and you’ve got something else.

  1. Can you call the bank that is the “proximate issuer” of your Visa card? Ours was through a local bank. Even if it was one of the “we operate a bank in two small towns in South Dakota but sell credit services by mail nationwide” operations, you ought to be able to get in touch with them.

  2. The likelihood is that “CITGO 2801 TEXANMAR” is not a randomly assumed CC identity, but corresponds to whatever Texan Mart or Market is franchise #2801 in in Cities Service Corp.'s database of franchises. Corporate can point you in the right direction there if you explain why you’re asking (one of their outlets was defrauded with your stolen credit card; you’re trying to help identify the thief, so he can be prosecuted).

If you have another CC (or debit card) go to every CITGO Texan Mart that you can access, and use your card to buy a lottery ticket. Or a candy bar. Or a cup of coffee. Keep a record of what you bought, what time you bought it, and where you bought it.

Next day, check your online banking statement, and find the entry for CITGO 2801 TEXANMAR.

That’s your store. Proceed from there.

BTW, does the amount of the charge look like it’s consistent with a gasoline purchase?
