Asking on behalf of the girlfriend. We are both in school and thus we get our prescriptions through our campus doctors/campus pharmacy, but given that it’s summer we don;t have that access.
This is fine with me, but she’s in Atlanta for the summer and will run out of her medications a good 3 weeks before school starts back up. My question is…is there any way for her to find a clinic or something down there where she can get a 30 day supply without having a regular doctor in the area? IT’s really only a one time thing and it’s only needed because she’s just down there for the summer.
Oh also it’s for citalopram if that means anything for anyone
Go to the local pharmacy (or call them) and speak to a pharmacist. The pharmacist can contact the clinic doctor for a prescription. They’ll either do it over the phone, via FAX, or a combination of both. Since it’s not a controlled substance, it shouldn’t be very complicated, but do allow a little time for mistakes and a second (or third) phone call. Don’t wait until she’s down to three pills, in other words.
If there’s refills on it, just bring it in to a local pharmacy and they’ll transfer over the script. No big deal.
You may want to check with the local laws though. In Wisconsin, for example, you used to only be able to transfer a script once. That is, if I had three refills, I could get it filled once here, transfer it there then it was stuck there, I couldn’t transfer it back (I’d have to get a new script). But they changed that now, besides, with some careful timing, it’s no big deal.
She might also want to ask about getting multiple refills at the same time, depending on the med, the pharmacy and the insurance, sometimes you can get a few months (usually three) worth at the same time.
She might also contact the campus pharmacy and ask if they can ship the medication, or ask if the campus doctor could phone in a scrip to a local-to-her pharmacy.
The crappy thing about talking to the campus pharmacy is that, given that it’s the summer and regardless of where she is in her continuing education she isn’t technically a “student”. So that’s another added hoop to go through.
I didn’t realize it was as easy as just calling them up though…that should help. Thanks!
Yep - any of the big chains (CVS, Walgreens…) maybe even some of the grocery store chains that are national-ish. I needed a scrip filled 2,000 miles from home once, and went into the local Rite-Aid and they had all my information in their system. I presume I could have gotten refills of “home” scrips as well.
In the OP’s case, filling at a drugstore might not be an option (when they’re at school at least) because it’s possible there are substantial discounts for students if they go through the school’s pharmacy setup.
In my experience this is doable with a certain amount of planning ahead. Generally insurance will pay for what the doctor ordered on the prescription. I the prescription is for one month of pills and it can be refilled x times then insurance will only pay for one month of pills at a time. You need to get the doctor to write a prescription for 6 months of pills to be refilled X/6 times.
