How can I get my wife to appreciate Automobiles? Is there a Gender issue here?

Well, it’s definitely not just a guy thing, because I get a lot of looks from women at my car, too. Most of them aren’t the least bit interested in what’s actually IN it, but they definitely like the way it looks. I have people leaning out of their cars to take a look at it.

My wife is much the same way. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with greasy parts, or engines or anything like that, but she loves the way her car looks, and she likes it when it goes fast.

And just so you don’t have to ask, I drive one of these (not my car, just looks exactly like it).

I’m a guy, and I love cars. If it’s going to be my daily driver, it must have a sense of style, it must have a powerful engine, and it’s gotta stand out from the rest. And no, my penis is not small. I just like cars. Just as someone who’s into music, baking, woodworking, or anything!

But I certainly don’t fault those that are not into it. But when someone talks to me about something they are interested in, I don’t fluff it off by saying, “I just don’t care…” That’s a little insulting, even if your wife said it jokingly. If I said that to anybody about their interest, those people would likely never talk to me again.

Thank you!

I believe that cars, not opposable thumbs, are what separates us from the animals. Driving a stick shift is what separates us from the apes and monkeys. Chalk me up for the “love cars” side.

…so I’m guessing there aren’t many Top Gear fans in here?

Put me down for the “Cars Are The Best Things Ever” club.

Yeah there are. I also liked the predecessor, 5th gear.

Ah someone with impeccable taste and class.

5th Gear is a rival program from another channel though, you occasionally hear the Top Gear presenters taking cheap shots at it.

Some of the 5th Gear presenters used to be on the earlier Top Gear program before it got revamped into its current (very entertaining) format.

I’m a guy and I have no interest for brandnames or technical details of cars beyond what I’ll actually use on the road.

Yeah, I have to second that. I certainly wouldn’t want my SO to say something like that about my hobbies…he usually at least looks at them patiently.

BUT…

how often do you ask her about it? If it’s a constant thing, I’d be annoyed. If it was really just a “Wow, check that out, how often do you see that?” then she could have at least said something nice.

Everybody has something that bores them silly. You couldn’t pay me to go to an opera. Sounds like cats in a washing machine to me. Not much you can do about it.

I love machines. Doesn’t matter what it is, car, boat, airplane. The number 1 rule is there is no such thing as too much hp.

Good point. If you know that she has no interest in cars, and then continue to blab on and on about them, you are the rude one. I think that the most you can expect from her is to listen politely for as long as her patience. If you abuse her patience, expect a gentle (or not-so-gentle) jab or two.

Have you asked her if there is anything that she does find interesting about cars? Maybe you could talk about that.

Yeah, note the car she drives and the one I drive. Ask her to switch and she looks at me like I have a third eye. Granted she has her moments where she likes to drive the Avalanche, but they are few and far between.

Car shows …blech.

Unless they are moving.

Like the Dream Cruise on Woodward Ave in August Something for the last 10 years or so.

Loads of fun to people watch and see all the old cars, muscle cars, trucks and whatnot. Even more fun when they sputter jet black clouds of death and then sputter and die and then need to be towed. We always cheer for this! YAY!
Hey, it’s free. Mockers love free!

Wait, am I to understand that men tend to like mechanical things more than women?

Shocked, I am. Shocked, I tell you. I may have to lie down.
