I know it’s kind of an absurd question, but one of my buddies gave me an early birthday present: a very nice hat sporting the Nashville Predators logo. Of course, he cut off the tags and I know him well enough to know that he doesn’t save receipts. I can’t exchange this bad boy.
He gave me a 7 and 3/8 size hat and I probably need a 7 1/2 or 7 5/8. It’s just baaarely too tight, which means bad headaches if I wear it.
How do I stretch this thing out a touch so I can wear it pain free? Any ideas?
If you can find the time, I believe this will work. Get the cap wet to relax the wool fibers. Blot between two towels until still damp. Put the hat on, and wear it until it dries.
Wool hairs are very curly, like a telephone cord. That’s why they’re apt to shrink, but it also lets them stretch under tension when wet.
Some hat shops sell a hat stretcher that consists of two wooden arcs with a turnbuckle in between.
I’ll give it a whirl. Thanks a bunch.
Somehow, the title for this thread just looks very, very wrong.
Hey, it’s not my fault I have a big head.
How much hair do you have on your melon? Are you fond of it? You can probably get yourself the room you need not so much by stretching the hat, but by lowering your hat size. With a lid on, no one will see the shaved head.
Have you been talking to Hal Briston?
Actually, I had a lot more hair up to a few months ago. Cut it all off, but what’s left is still pretty thick.
I will never. Ever. EVER. Shave my head again. Like I said, I’ve got a big noggin and it looks dumb without hair.
Well, in my experience fitted baseball hats are really pretty well made, as a result they tend to be kinda stubborn when it comes to things like this. AskNotts suggestion is probably the best one. Get her soaking wet and then wear it until it dries. I tend to wash mine in the washing machine when they need it and wear it until it dries to ensure that it retains a good shape. Don’t know how much space you be able to create, but if you only need a sliver of room it might work.
Also, I wouldn’t entirely give up on returning it just yet. If all you want to do is an even exchange, stores tend to be somewhat permissive. Even if it’s not the store you bought it at. As long as it doesn’t show signs of wear, you could probably go in and exchange it if you simply asked. Give it a shot before soaking it or wearing it too many times.
Hung, you can cut the white band inside the cap.
This is what ballplayers do.
Can you elaborate? Do you mean snip it vertically in one place? I’d just as soon avoid cutting anything if I can. I’ll probably get it wet tomorrow and wear it aboot the hoose.
Yeah, the get-it-wet-and-wear-it-'til-it-dries method works pretty well.
I’ve actually worn one that I was trying stretch out into the shower, taking it off only long enough to wash my hair, and the hat, too, for good measure, with the same shampoo.
A few runs through the washing machine, or even the dishwasher (don’t use dish detergent, it usually contains bleach) will soften it up a little as well. Dishwashers have a heating element that gets the water hotter than what comes from the tap. Just don’t let it dry if it ain’t on your head.
I’d like to try this with too! Are we talking *soaking *the hat before wearing it or just *dampening *the brim?
I’d advise against this. I tried it once, and it is extremely uncomfortable. I can’t imagine a ballplayer actually doing this. Why wouldn’t they just get the equipment manager to score them a different size?
Look at the ballcap inside-out with the bill down.
Cut the liner at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock locations, you will easily pick-up a 1/2 size.
Ballcaps tend to shrink when they get wet from sweat, alot of guys will wear the same lid the whole season, they not only shrink, they get really dirty & smelly.
The best way to fix a tight cap is to cut the liner.
HEY!
I’m a poet and don’t knowit.
Instead of starting a new thread, can I ask a flip question? How can I shrink a fitted ballcap. It’s a 7 1/2, which fits fine when I haven’t cut my hair for three months but is way too loose most of the time. Unfortunately, I bought it when I hadn’t cut my hair for nearly three months. Yeah, I suppose I could buy a new hat, but just how many hats do I need for just one team?
Good for you

Don’t get me started, my good friend of many years and shared (even in the same night sometimes) girlfriends.
