I’ve got the Nexus 5x (which I really like) but one problem I’m having is configuring Messenger to use my GV #. In Advanced Settings there’s a setting for “Your phone number” which I have set to my GV# but when people get texts from me it’s from the carrier number. Does anybody know how I can fix it? Or if it’s possible?
I can’t find the link right now, but I remember reading that it wasn’t compatible with Google Voice and wouldn’t be for a while?
Hangouts, however, is. You can also use the Voice app itself for texts.
Why Google needs so many different programs (Talk, Voice, Hangouts, Messenger), I’ll never know…
Ok, thanks for the reply…uh, Reply. I’ll look into switching to Hangouts.
Just FYI, my 2c (after having gone through this same process recently, after using GV for 5+ years):
The Google Voice app has Search. It does not send pictures/MMS easily.
The Hangouts app does pictures and group messages (with Android Lollipop and above, I think; you’re fine on the 5x). It does not have Search, however. And the desktop version doesn’t do group text messages.
Both allow you to call and text from your GV number. Hangouts Dialer, a separate program, allows you to make free VOIP calls from your GV number using data instead of cell phone minutes.
