And stop assuming that people actually underneath it all, think exactly the same way as you do - especially people halfway around the world whose culture and history is radically different from yours.
And why should Israelis and Palestinians be exactly like black and white South Africans? Are all foreigners the same to a privileged white Westerner like you?
I have to admit that I am both vexed and obsessed with that sentence. The structure and phrasing! The content! It has the illusion of meaning, yet just hidden out of reach. When you dig deeper there are crevices that seem like they hold the secret to unlocking everything. Alas, they remain unyielding.
The sentence toys with me. It taunts me. It perches upon a bust of Pallas above my chamber door.
But who is knowing? Is it the dumb? Why is the knowing so much more salient than the how??? I must understand; something depends on my knowing, yet I don’t! Can I even?
Why would you assume they would be so different? We saw these same concerns when they got rid of Apartheid and it turns out that the fears were largely created by the conscience of the guilty.
I mean folks on your side of the debate keep going on about how what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is not even in the same league as Apartheid. Is the average Joe Palestinian hatred for the Jews that much more intense than the black hatred of the whites in South Africa? Sure, the government would no longer be run as a Jewish state with almost entirely Jewish officals and largely Jewish military and police but why is that a bad thing?
Can we agree that the majority, even the vast majority of Palestinians just want what all of us want, safety, prosperity and freedom? Sure there are a few Palestinains who have been twisted into violence and hatred by almost 70 years of oppression and are probably beyond redemption but ethnic cleansing requires more than the efforts of a few violent fanatics, especially when the Jews still have most of the guns.
It seems to me that the main concern here is the preservation of the Jewish nature of the Israeli government and state.
Your example is South Africa. My counter-examples are much closer geographically and, IMHO, much more relevant: Iraq and Syria. We can look right now - some of us more or less right out our windows - and see what happens when two Middle Eastern ethnic/religious groups, with years of mistrust and violent history fueled by religion and nationalism, are forced to share a country. It isn’t pretty. And believe me, any hard feelings that exist between Sunnis and Shi’ites are just minor pet peeves compared to how Israelis and Palestinians feel about each other.
You said that what people want most is safety, prosperity and freedom. That is, unfortunately, a fairly naive view of humanity. Sure, people want those things, but they also want *justice *(or what they perceive as justice), they want revenge, and they want what’s owed them. People are assholes. I’m surprised you haven’t noticed that yet.
That would undermine the peace process and it proves you are a racist bastard >_>
I do not support the policies of the current (failed) coalition government led by Netanyahu the “hero”. He brings hatred for Israel amongst the Palestinian youth.
Only if you guys could shift your focus away from the OP to the revamped OP, then some discussion could be made. So sad, you are too shallow to.
Nice try, but the toothpastes was already out of the tube. It’s far too much more funny to play with post #1 style than to with post #42 contents. It the way things roll on ong the straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty dope.
