How can you reduce the number of hours you need to sleep? (Uberman's sleep schedule)

This is a two-parter.

Firstly, I’d like the Straight Dope on the Uberman’s sleep schedule.

Secondly, what methods are there to reduce the number of hours of sleep that are needed? I sleep alot, and I enjoy it, but I’d like to reduce my dependancy on it.

My boyfriend does the, um, I forget, not the Uberman but the “three hours core sleep three twenty minute naps” one. It’s worked well for him, given him a lot more time and after the adjustment period he hasn’t had trouble with it. It isn’t for me.

He had to just jump right in and be a tired asshole for a couple weeks, it’s the only way. Your friends and loved ones will not want to be around you while you adjust, FYI.

Its unsustainable for most people and tends to produce a low quality of sleep.

Polyphasic sleep like uberman isnt generally about less sleep, just sleeping at different intervals. For less sleep you can hope you body can handle it and try to get up a half hour earlier every week or so and see if it suites you. Or incorporate napping into your routine.

Time and moving beyond middle age should do it for you. I say enjoy it while you can.
