I suppose I should be ashamed of myself for having to ask the question, but here goes. I have a few pieces of furniture that I’d like to donate to the Salvation Army. I have a sofa, matching loveseat, coffee table, four pieces of exercise equipment, etc. The sofa is fine, but the loveseat is . .well, um . . disgusting. The arms are dark from countless Sunday newspaper readings, and the cushions are lumpy. The cushion fabric is ripped with mystery stains. Of course, I will wash whatever I can, but the loveseat is toast. Will the Salvation Army accept my donation, or will they turn me in to the Good Housekeeping police?
why don’t you call them & ask?
We wouldn’t accept a dirty item at any of our thrift stores but some of the employees aren’t too bright & sometimes do take them.
Our local Salvation Army would probably throw it out. I’m not sure if they have to pay for their garbage pick up (if they do, I’d hate to see the bill for it), but for myself, I wouldn’t take the chance. Just throw it out. It’s the kinder thing.
Kudos for asking, though. Most people wouldn’t care whether it was useable or not.
If I remember correctly, no matter the condition, they will be cleaning it after you donate.

- If you go into my local Salvation Army and look around, all the clothes and furniture they have look basically new–just really, really ugly.

- But then, they have (mysteriously) some ancient televisions and most of a 1970’s era reel-to-reel tape deck. So maybe for electronic goods the rules are different.
