How Clean Is Your Home?

So, if I were to pop by your home unexpectedly, about 95% of the time how clean would it be?

On a scale from 1 - 10:

10 = you can see your reflection on my scrubbed kitchen counter, eat off the sparkling clean floor, run your fingers over every piece of furniture and find no dust and there is no clutter whatsoever.

1 = as soon as the health department allows us back in, and you can find the sofa under the junk in the living room, I’ll chase the rats out of the kitchen, scrape off the mold on some food from the fridge and we can have dinner.

Whilst it sometimes might rate a 1 (when I’ve been doing mega hours at work and the kids have been living up to their usual domestic-slob status) mostly it sits around a 3.5-4.

But don’t come around tonight, OK?

Normally, around 8 or so. Pretty good for a single guy.

Right now, let’s call it a 5. I was quite ill for some time and haven’t quite bounced back to my usual pedantic self yet.

I no longer rate the Oscar Madison end of the scale, but certainly will never rate the Felix Unger end. I am probably below average, but not horribly so.l

Our house will never be a 10. Usually, it’s a 5 or 6. Right now, it’s an 8, because I cleaned all the carpeting and we both went nuts cleaning and straightening up to have company last weekend. It’s so nice to come home to a clean house. I have this thing, though, that won’t let me allow the place to get as low as a 4 on your scale. My wife comes from a home that was always a 2, so getting her on the program has been a bit of a struggle, but she’s coming around.

On its best day, I’m guessing mine is a 7 or 8. On its worst, well, it’s probably been about 1.00000000000000001

IOW, if cleanliness is next to G-dliness, I’m in a LOT of trouble.

On a typical day, it’s probably running about a 4. Right now it’s looking like a 2, but that’s just because we’re starting to pack the place up for our move next month – boxes everywhere, and clutter strewn all about.

Lemme esplain tho. I am a divorced guy. I bought my house last July. Since then I’ve done my dishes and laundry. I own a vacuum cleaner. In less than a year, my house became a mess. I lucked across someone who cleans homes for a living and she is amazing!!! Once a month (starting last week) she is cleaning my house. And best of all, the woman is anal about cleaning.

I’m running a solid 3 at the moment, but hope to bring it up to a 6 by EOB. This won’t be easy. I shall start with loading the dishwasher. Be right back.

'Kay…I’m back. Dishwasher unloaded, loaded, re-filled the “shiny dishes” dispenser and wiped off the counters. I think I brought me up to a 3.5 already!

(and that only took 7 minutes. I feel really guilty when I look at it in those terms.)

It’s a solid 8 most of the time, although I’ve been packing up to move so it looks like hell right now. The new place is going to be a 10 if it kills me.

Well, I did remove the injured bird from under the coach this morning. Teeny brought it in from the yard last night. Bad kitty!

Most of the time my house is probably a 5 or 6. Fairly tidy (except for the kids’ rooms) but pretty dusty and dirty, because I’m a lousy housekeeper. Today my house is at least a 9. We (finally!) hired a cleaning service, and they came in and cleaned the house from top to bottom. There are still a few stains on the carpets (Mouse blood is hard to get out. Thanks, cats.) and spots on the walls from years of neglect, but otherwise it’s pretty danged clean. I love it! I’m hoping to keep the place in the 8 to 10 range from here on out.

On an average day, it’s a solid 8. If you dropped by unexpectedly, you may find a few things out of place or a coffee cup in the sink, but the first thing I do when I get home at night is put everything where it belongs, deal with any obvious dust (my place gets really dusty really fast for some reason), and do a quick floor-sweep (again with the dust!). It takes 10 minutes, and allows me to fully relax and enjoy my evening.

My house is about a 7 or so. Never gets real bad. We have to dogs, two cats and live on a gravel road/drive.

I took a week of vactaion time to clean my fathers house. I’m on the morning of day 4 now. The twenty yard roll off dumpster is about half full. I think I’m gonna call it quits after today. It’s a hell of a lot better than it was, but I don’t have enough energy left to do much more and I’m getting a bit homesick (literally)

We’re usually a 5. It very rarely gets worse than that, but it doesn’t get much better than that very often either (we really do have to have guests coming in order to do any major cleaning. Our best is probably around an 8).

Somewhere between a 6 and a 9 most days.

The house never gets dirty, but only because we have a cleaning person come in once a week. So toilets, showers, floors, etc. are mostly clean all the time.

Clutter, on the other hand, we have to deal with. Some days I cook, we have a bottle or two of wine, and the kitchen is a pigsty until one of us cleans up. That’s the “6” days.

Then there’s the weeks where we’re both busy, we scrounge or eat out a lot, and the house stays more or less clean.

If we add in the non-public parts of the house - bedroom, offices, etc - the net number goes down because the clutter goes WAY up.

Between a 6 and 8 most days. Right now it’s more like a 4, though. I’ve been working for two weekends, then we were both out of town last weekend. So I haven’t had time to clean, and of course he pitches in with me but boys need assigned tasks it seems.

At its worst, it may be a 5, my wife and I have no kids and we both work so we aren’t home that often to mess it up. We also shower at the gym most nights, so the shower never really gets dirty. It has been worse but we have a cleaning lady who comes every two weeks. She is a bit compulsive about cleaning, although not as comulsive as the first. The first one moved the oven and fridge to clean under and behind them.

I don’t like dirty dishes so I do them after I cook and put the plates in the dishwasher, so the house never looks unsanitary just untidy. Currently it is about a 6.
