This thread is so inspiring.
I had always assumed that I was the messiest person around. Other people never have piles of dirty dishes in the sink, or piles of socks underneath the computer desk, or piles of paper everywhere, or piles of mail in the bathroom, or piles of cardboard somewhere in the vicinity of the recycling box that still haven’t been recycled even though they’ve been there so long they’re beginning to compost on their own.
(At least, I thought so until I met my friend Kate. Now, I should say “MOST other people …”)
Eventually it occurred to me that other people’s houses are always clean when I see them because they always clean up before having company (ie, me) come over.
But I still thought I was the messiest person around.
Now, seeing all these 3s and 4s really gladdens my heart.
I’m not a slob! I’m AVERAGE! Yippee!
In answer to the OP: I’m maybe a four or five. Lots of clutter (you know how everyone (or nearly everyone) has a random bowl or drawer or basket full of random bits of miscellaneous crap that isn’t exactly garbage but isn’t worth the trouble of filing away and keeping? Buttons, business cards, rubber bands, pencils that don’t write as well as you’d like but are useful in a pinch, etc … well, half my kitchen table is full of such bowls. I’ll get right on that.) but not much dirt, I keep the dishes pretty clean. And I vacuum my hardwood floors a lot, sometimes twice a week, because it really helps my dust allergy, and I think that makes up for some of the multitudes of piles of clutter everywhere.
My house runs between a 1 and a 2 because I have six cats and I hate to clean. If you came over, I would entertain you on the porch.
I can’t believe anyone here is really a 1. If we accept that 1 is really the nadir of cleanliness, then this house is an example. (I warn you, it’s really, really gross)
I bet all you 1’s are really just uptight 4’s…
We’re at an 8-9 organization and neat-wise: No stacks of stuff anywhere, dishes always done, etc, etc.
However, as others have said, it is shedding season and the three labs have effectively brought our score down to a 5. Everything is nicely organized and in its place, it just happens to be covered in fur.
I’m about a 3. You can walk through the house without stepping on stuff on the floor. There are usually a few dishes in the sink. I sweep once a week.I have no closets, so clothes storage is difficult. I really need to get much better. It’s dirtier now while I’m unemployed. I keep thinking I’ll clean, but I don’t, and I’m there more to dirty up the place.
StG
It’s about a 2 at present, but let me explain.
we had planned to gut the kitchen, moving the kitchen stuff into the dining room in the interim. But Easter Sunday, we had torrential rain here, with an unknown hole in our roof. The DR plaster was ruined, as was the wallpaper etc.
So, the kitchen AND the DR is all in the living room, with the microwave residing in the family room for now. The plasterers are done, and the cabinets come next week.
ordinarily, we run about a 5-6. With us both working and with 3 kids, I think that’s fiine.
Once the kids are gone, I will clear out all the clutter–I find it hard to breathe sometimes with all this crap around. It’s mostly toys, and school books, projects, sports stuff, and instruments etc.
Really? What would you do - sing? Dance? Make balloon animals?
I think we need better measuring standards for this - these standards are pretty subjective. We need a point system, like start with 100 points for a spotless house, and take off X number of points for dishes in the sink, point for every pile of clutter, add points on for how often you sweep, vacuum, etc. Any of you anal retentive freaks* want to come up with a housekeeping grading system?
*I say that with all love.
Down around 2-3, but let me explain.
My parents were not naturally tidy people, so I didn’t get it drilled in from a young age. I live alone, work full time, and take two science classes at the local community college. Thus, the cleaning gets done by me. (I’m trying to train the cat, but have so far been less than successful. She says the Formula 409 bothers her fur.)
The kitchen and bathroom are passable, and I could whip something up that was reasonably hygienic, foodwise. But I also got into the habit of moving extra crap around with me during The Weird Times, so I…I…
I have lived in this place for two years, and never really unpacked. There are colonies of boxes around the place. I know where to find everything I need, but haven’t had the energy or motivation to take care of all the extra stuff. So it’s beyond cluttered.
Actually, I would feed you pie while swinging from my gutters like a monkey.
After seeing tremorviolet’s link, I guess I really am a bit higher than a 2.
I would have to say we hover around a 6.5 thru and 8 on average.
If you throw in the dog hair ( which I can’t see anymore after 10 years) we might drop down a notch, but only on the wood floor.
Family gatherings and parties, the house is a spotless Felix Unger 10.
Too bad it regresses back to its natural way of things.
Wow, you really do know how to entertain me.
