Is it because all the Third World women are now clothed above the waist and traditional bare breasts are totally a thing of the past?
Or did National Geographic get politically correct “religion”?
I’m not sure, but times in these latter days sure have changed since the early-to-mid 20th century, when National Geographic earned its soft-core reputation that brought on many sniggering jokes.
The last time I saw bare breasts in National Geographic was a couple years ago, in an article on the South Pacific island of New Caledonia. 40 or 50 years ago, it would have been the native women shown bare-breasted. Not now! Now they’re all carrying Bibles and going to church wearing modest (if a bit dowdy) dresses. The bared breasts belonged to white women from France, sunbathing on the beach.
I wonder if this is what moralists like William Bennett and fundies like Falwell and Pat Robertson have in mind when they blather on about “the good old days”? When the only way to see naked boobies was to look at Renaissance paintings and national Geographic.
I have to admit from flipping through a few issues in the doctor’s office, National Geographic is less “interesting” than it used to be…
