The latest one is Jed York, owner & CEO of the San Francisco 49ers who was arrested in East Palestine, OH (population < 5000) for prostitution which has made national news because of who he is. Now he did grow up 20-25 miles away in Youngstown, OH (population < 60,000). Is this a case of someone remembered the name of the rich hometown boy & tipped off some news organization, which then ran with it & caused it to become a national story?
Seven years ago, Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots was arrested for the same thing, in FL. Also caught up in that sting was former Citigroup President John Havens. Was that a case of the Kraft name broke & some reporter started looking at the backgrounds of the other arrestees & realized another one was famous because I just don’t see a bank president being of the same name recognition as an NFL team owner.
I’ve also seen stories of someone who is a long (10 years or so) retired pro athlete because they were arrested for [whatever]. Again, who is pouring thru arrest records in every jurisdiction in the US & able to piece together that that name was a famous guy 10 or more years ago?
I realize this is something AI could do now but minor & retired celebrity arrests have been making the news for years.
Any reporter worth their salt writing a bio piece on a famous person is likely to find any skeletons in the closet of public record. It’s especially easy since the dawn of Internet criminal databases.
Because they’re celebrities? I don’t understand how any more explanation is required. In addition to reporters perusing publicly available court records probably daily (indeed, many locales publish a list of arrests in the newspaper), a police officer who recognizes a celebrity (or a celebrity who loudly announces themselves as such) may draw special attention to the case as well.
In Jed York’s case, he was arrested over 2000 miles from where he lives. While admittedly, not the biggest football fan, I had never heard his name before until I saw the headline. I’m just amazed at how many people who are / were famous get arrested & someone is somehow able to make the connection that so-&-so, who’s in another state from where you’d expect them to be is the person who was arrested not some average Joe with the same name.
I live in SF and this was at the top of the local news today, complete with speculation about whether the NFL will force him to sell the team because he has not lived up to the stated standards of behavior for NFL owners. (I almost choked on my cereal at that.) It is probably not as much of interest in the rest of the country, more of a side note.
There are about 24,000 arrests* for prostitution in the USA each year. About 66 per day, or about one every 20 minutes. But we obviously don’t hear about most of them – because the people arrested aren’t newsworthy’. The only ones we hear about are the ones that involve famous people. That’s hardly surprising.
And most of the arrests (75-80%) are of customers, not actual prostitutes.
Probably because the arrests are done by policewomen (or policemen in drag) doing stings on street corners. Actual prostitutes know enough to avoid being the first to say anything incriminating, so It’s harder to get evidence on them. (Also, I presume paying ‘protection money’ to law enforcement still happens sometimes.)
My first thought was these things make news because: “Oh, how the mighty have fallen…” I suppose for some folks, it’s some sort of karmic payback because why should he be rich and famous and not me?
AI will only make that sort of searching easier and more accurate.
There are a LOT of sour grapes people out there. And a lot of people who just have no idea what wealthy actually means. I mean, I’ve seen people on Reddit claim that making over 100k makes you wealthy or rich or some other hyperbolic adjective. Which isn’t the case; it’s roughly what 50k was around 1998 or so, which was middle class, but far from rich back then.

That’s pretty much it - people like to see the rich and powerful stumble. It’s newsworthy only because it sells. There is a whole army of photographers seeking to catch a famous person picking their nose or scratching their ass - this is what the people want!
Here’s another example, one of the first hits from a quick Googling - Marcell Dareus was a NFL lineman from 2011 - 2019. In 2024, five years after he was out of the limelight, he was arrested on DV charges. Whos reading the police blotters & saying, wait, wasn’t he a pro athlete some years ago?
People who earn their living by finding such things. They are very very good at it. Also, we have no idea how many people got away with it. Do they catch 90% of hasbeens and minor celebrities or 50% or 10%?
