I mean, really. I’ve been eyeing college students throw out couches for 10+ years, and they almost never have cushions on them. What the hell? An otherwise perfectly good piece of furniture is rendered completely useless. It’s driving me crazy.
The cushions are used as pillows for guests crashing on the floor. Very common in college.
so… why don’t they get thrown out with the couch?
Because college students will keep the cushions as extra pillows. The couches are usually tossed out 'cause they’re too hard to move. The cushions are easy to move and make great spare pillows for your passed out friends crashing on the floor.
Been there, done that. Proud owner of couch cushions sans couch…back in the day!
so when they move, they won’t get a new couch?
Plus couch cushions are a great source of open cell foam that is used to make boffer weapons.
I once put an entire couch…cushions and all…out for the trash. My driveway is on a busy street, and so when I put large items out, they often get removed before the trash collector gets to it. With the couch, the cushions disappeared one by one, until they were all gone, and the couch itself was taken away by the trash collector. I always thought that was weird. Apparently, people have uses for odd sofa cushions.
Isn’t that the whole point of throwing something away?

I’m wondering if maybe homeless people are taking the cushions. If you’re sleeping in odd doorways or under bridges, those cushions could be very useful.
Yeah, that’s what I was going to say. We have a large homeless population here, particularly in the winter (Florida, don’t you know), and couch cushions and other random soft items like pillows are often part of a bum’s pack/shopping cart/stroller. Beats concrete, anyway.
