Muslims are supposed to do it - at least if they follow the Sunan al-Fitra (“Customs of Nature”). From link:
“'A’isha reported: Muhammad said: Ten are the acts according to fitra: clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, snuffing water in the nose, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the armpits, shaving the pubic hair and cleaning one’s private parts with water. The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth. (Sahih Muslim, II.502)”
I know that going to a hammam can be a very surprising experience for western women who are often asked why they haven’t shaved their pubes.
ETA: hadn’t seen that the OP asked specifically about North America. Regard this post as an exotic anecdote, then.
Joy: I bet you don’t even know where babies come from, dummy.
Randy: I do too. From down there by the fuzzy lightning bolt.
And…
“A nurse was on duty in the emergency room when a young woman with purple hair styled into a punk rocker Mohawk, sporting a variety of tattoos, and wearing strange clothing, entered. It was quickly determined that the patient had acute appendicitis, so she was scheduled for immediate surgery. When she was completely disrobed on the operating table, the staff noticed that her pubic hair had been dyed green, and above it there was a tattoo that read, ‘Keep off the grass.’ Once the surgery was completed, the surgeon wrote a short note on the patient’s dressing, which said, ‘Sorry, had to mow the lawn.’”
I’ll be here all week, tip your waitress, try the veal.
But seriously, if a SO wanted me to trim, I might use a mustache trimmer to get it down to 1/8" or so, but no way I’d shave.
Anecdote, sure, but of all the women I’ve been with in the past three years, exactly two had pubic hair longer than 1/4". So, IME, less than ten percent.
