How deep trouble is Carnival Corporation in?

Today, I read about a Carnival ship that lost power and whose passengers were stranded on board. Hey, wasn’t that the one that had to be towed? No? You mean they had 2 ships fail in similar circumstances a month apart  ?

Then, I found out they were owners of the Costa Concordia :smack:

So, how will this affect the company? Are they likely to go out of business?

Also looking for a better phrasing for the title.

They own eleven cruise lines, over 100 ships and had almost 16 billion dollars in revenues. I think they can weather these storms.

The situation with this one is a lot less terrible than the last ship. They were having some machinery issues (backup generators?) and went into port at St. Maarten. They’re not convinced they can get the machinery working properly and would rather fly everyone out from St. Maarten than risk trouble later on. From the reports I was hearing this afternoon, they had lights, running water, hot water, hot food, etc. The ship is working, it’s just not something they want to risk.

The passengers aren’t even stranded since they’ve been in port the last few days. I mean, they need to return to the ship for a place to sleep I suppose but they’re not at sea.

And, yet another one: the Carnival Legend has an issue with its main propeller (according to some friends of mine who are unfortunate enough to be on it at this moment), and its current cruise is apparently ending early

I think they own several US Senators as well. And probably a bunch of other politicians around the world.

I wasn’t going on a cruise before all this happened and I’m not going on one now. Net business loss to Carnival = 0.

I’m sure they will weather this storm.

I’ve never been on a cruise, but I have friends who like to go on cruises. There seems to be a lot of brand loyalty and people who like Carnival tend to stick to Carnival or whatever their preferred carrier is. Carnival’s PR may suffer from people who are considering a cruise but who are still on the fence about which one.

What would they want with politicians? It’s not like they’re a polluting company or something.

I’ve been on several cruises, all on Celebrity ships. Not a single complaint.

Some of those ships seem too big to sail.

They receive special tax breaks in the US, and I’d think it would benefit their business to have no problems docking their ships at ports around the world.

My sister and brother-in-law were in the process of deciding which big trip to go on to celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary, when the poop boat thing hit the news. They crossed “cruise” off their list. I suspect there are a non-trivial number of people who will do the same; and an even larger number of people who might have initially said, “Well, I like Carnival and have had good experiences, so I’m willing to give them a pass on one big mistake,” but are changing their minds after more cruises are having problems.

I doubt they’ll go out of business, though. Worst-case scenario, they have to do a re-branding like ValuJet did after the Everglades crash.

I’m assuming that AaronX was being sarcastic when he said that Carnival Corporation wasn’t a polluting company, as cruise ships actually do pollute quite a bit.

golf clap

Actually, no, I was thinking they aren’t like loggers or miners.

I love this term (I’m envisioning Gavin McLeod and the rest of the Poop Boat crew desperately trying to find a working bathroom).

I doubt the phrase will make it into Carnival Cruise advertising though.

they could be in a shitload of trouble.

There was a short news story on NPR several days ago, (before the most recent power outage). But the gist of the story was that Carnival bookings hadn’t really dropped off since the poop boat event. Shocked me. I know that a week on one of those floating hotels is not my choice for a vacation.

Poop
Brown colored goo
Thrones on board, for defecating, too.
Poop, Life’s smelly reward
Let it flow, it floats back to you.

Poop Boat, soon everyone will have the runs
The Poop Boat, promises feces for everyone
Fecal impaction, bowel obstruction
Your’re feeling colonic slow transit

After the Triumph thing I want to start calling them Cannibal Cruise Lines, but I see the name is already taken.
