How desparate does this sound?

As I have mentioned in previous threads, my current job sucks. The people suck, the building sucks, and so on. Unfortunately, new jobs are hard to find that pay a decent wage. My last job was at a pawn shop. I liked working there, but was “encouraged to pursue other avenues of employment” by the then-manager. The official reason was insubordination, but the real reason was that I took his ego and stomped that sucker flat in front of other store managers (I was a reluctant store manager).

Anyway, he is no longer there and there is a medium-sized chance I could go back. If the pay is right.

Now the desparation part. I hate my current job so much that I am willing to:

  1. Take a small (10-12%) pay cut.
  2. Pay an agency to find me a job (NOT CHEAP!).
  3. All of the above.

Pride is not a factor here, BTW.

I hate being in this position, but I fear for my sanity if I stay where I am much longer. I’m not gonna go postal (apologies to postal workers), but there is a growing possibility that I would tell my bosses where to and how far in to shove the whole f*cking place. I have to consider my family, mortgage, and such and my own sanity is suffering.
Opinions? Advice? A job  ?

My first reponse is to say that if you would really like your old job back, then go for it. Myself, I wouldn’t mention that being willing to take a pay cut unless they seem reluctant to re-hire you for the same wage and you are really, truly desperate.

Can you use a temp agency? My current position was temp-to-perm and I was hired through an agency. And I really like this job; the hours are as flexible as I need, the pay is good and my co-workers are great.

You didn’t mention what sort of job you have; is it possible to do contract work until you find what you want? Also, some agencies don’t require a fee unless you get hired.

What sort of employment agencies are availabe to you and what percent of your current wage would you need to shell out?

Can you keep working at your old job while the agency is scouring the area for you?

I don’t plan on telling the previous employer about the extent of my current dilemma. I’ll let them make the offer. What the heck, I’ve been here this long, I can stick it out a little more. Just a little.

I’ve looked into temp agaencies, but they have nothing remotely in my current salary range (most are paying $8-9/hr).

I currently work for a paper-chemical distribution company as a customer service rep and there is no contract work in this field.

Most agencies are charging 2-5 weeks GROSS salary as a payment!!! If, for some reason, the job doesn’t work out, you are basically screwed and have to pay anyway.

I am looking for a job currently, even going as far as calling from work to set up interviews.

OK, yeah, given that set of circumstances I, personally, would try to get back my old job. I hope everything works out for you.
