Probably a subconscious allegory of the desire of millions of housebound men (and some women too) to leave behind the domestic joys of home and family for a few hours’ relaxation at the pub.
No doubt some feel the urge to escape their aging parents, unpleasant in-laws, bratty nieces and nephews, grandkids, etc. to the point of digging tunnels from their semi-attacheds with their bare hands, if necessary…
Correct. Plus, the James Bond and other film/TV-series marathons have enough cult appeal to attract a fairly sizable audience.
I’ve heard about that. It is rather curious that the TV showing of The Great Escape at Christmas has become the UK’s equivalent to U.S. TV showings of It’s a Wonderful Life. Is that the only time of year they show it? Here in the U.S., The Great Escape pops up fairly frequently on one of the cable networks like TBS or Turner Classic Movies.
Well, I used to think–UP TILL NOW–that this was exclusively due to my own weird mind set. I mean, *Casino Royale * (the big screen one) was a farce, yes, but there was actually so much else in it, that upon further thought…
