How did money work in the Star Trek universe?

True and I agree 100%.

But it pushes against the notion that everyone in the future are diehard vegans who are horrified at the thought of eating meat. Riker may not have liked most Klingon food but he never evinced the notion that he hated eating meat. He seemed to have no problem with it at all (live gagh aside and he managed that without much fuss).

On DS9 Sisko’s dad is a chef and cooks meat all the time and supposedly makes meals people line up to get.

The future is not vegan.

I think it’s more just that most people have a visceral “ew, gross” reaction, and many people never get past that, but if/when you do, many find they like it just fine. It’s like a few decades ago, when sushi was still relatively unfamiliar to Americans: A lot of folks went “ew, raw fish!”. And then eventually, most people tried it, and now it’s pretty much mainstream.

Well…I love vegan food.

I also love meat.

I’m the omnivore nature made us.

So…?

So, Riker was not actually horrified at the thought of killing and eating animals. Indeed, he was all over that as soon as he had the chance, but meat was evidently not served as part of their standard space rations. (Real meat, anyway. People were seen eating “chicken” sandwiches and such. Also synthetic meat is not so much science fiction as a reality already today.)

In Lower Decks, mention is made of the fact that senior officers have access to “good” replicators and/or recipes that are not available to everyone, though no explicit mention of this being linked to money.

Really? Because that goes against the egalitarian spirit of Star Trek since the franchise began. (note: I’ve never seen the show)

That’s really taking things back to the “age of sail”. Must be the residual Nicholas Meyer influence.

Rather, I think that he was actually horrified at the thought of eating and killing animals, though not for ethical reasons, but just because it was sufficiently outside of his experience that he found it gross. But just like Americans have largely overcome our disgust with sushi in the past few decades, he ended up overcoming his disgust with eating animal flesh, once he was sufficiently exposed to it.

Benjamin Sisko recommending the “shrimp creole” at his dad’s restaurant on earth. And we see fresh seafood in the restaurant. This is cooked from scratch. Not replicator stuff.

IIRC, Sisko’s father didn’t charge for his food. Wasn’t there an episode where he said he runs the restaurant because he enjoys doing it?
