People over at Snopes were always talking about it, so I looked in. I registered a couple years ago, but my account died due to inactivity, so I’m back again.
My ex-boyfriend showed it to me.
My agent booked me.
I was moaning about lack of interesting things to read on the net , and trying to find out what newsgroups and bulletin boards were - when a friend sent me here - and here I have stayed, happily for the most part. Except when my poor innocent oldest son wandered blindly into the pit one day and was hounded from the board - I didn’t feel happy then, but I stayed, and he recovered.
Great thread idea BTW!
'Cos I remember very well - via a simple Google search. A work colleague had a problems with squirrels in the room of his house and we were having a wild discussion how to get rid of them. In the UK they are protected! Protecting tree rats circa “rats in drag” - crazy eh?
So I google on Squirrel Pest Control and up pops a SD thread entitled “How to kill evil Nazi Groundhogs”. Now I have not tried to link a thread to another but a search has found my original entry to the wonderful world of SD and here it is. I lurked - copy the link to my mates and we thought this one of the funniest things we had ever read on the web…
A memorable day!
I read this hysterical rant about potato wedges and I linked on from that story. I have been addicted ever since. I look up said rant occasionally and burst my hole laughing every time. I never get tired of it.
Mr. 'addi sent me an e-mail.
All it said was the word “amusing” along with a link to If LotR Had Been Written By Someone Else!?
I was a reader of the column in a Salt Lake indie paper caller the SLUG.
One day i took a chance on the net and searched to see if there were online columns.
And once, I saw a blimp.
word of mouth led me to this site
The stupid duck’s echo e-mail. I called “BS” and had to find a way to back up my point. A search (including asking on another, lesser board) led me to the Master’s voice.
While reading it, I saw the link to the board, so I had to check it out. A reply in a GD thread required my presence, so I signed up right away.
Then, one day, I happened upon the Trek Dopers and was led to a life of debauchery.
Someone on another board I frequent (who, I imagine, is a member here as well) posted a link to Scylla’s blimp in the night story. I enjoyed it so much I looked around a bit Lurked for a while (a good six months), honestly the only reason I finally registered when I did was to do a search.
-K.
Long, long ago, in a forgotten time known to senile madmen as “the 80s” my parents gave me The Straight Dope and Return of the Straight Dope for my birthday. I devoured and esentially memorized them from cover to cover.
Fast-forward to the late 90’s. I’m surfing the 'net and something, somewhere reminds of The Straight Dope, so I type straightdope.com into the address bar just to see what happens, and here I am.
Aguecheek told me about it.
