How do I deal with this employment situation?

I’m from the USA but I live in Trinidad&Tobago and have permanent residency, I’ve been trying to find a job recently and I keep running into two issues.

1.Employers seem unsure it is legal to hire me, I’ve had to explain to them that permanent residency confers the ability to work legally in the country and have even shown them government websites.

2.There seems to be a sense that a job is not a job per se but an act of charity, and its wrong somehow that I would try to get a job here. The average per capita wage here is less then ten grand below the USA, yet people have some idea that this county is so tiny and poor like an inferiority complex. Usually they just ask me if I’m serious and why I would want to work here for less than the USA and the whole interview just becomes about that and me. They will sometimes admit they know I will jump ship at the soonest chance, I also suspect they realize I am not desperate so won’t put up with crap.

Needless to say I’m not getting call backs. This is getting annoying.

*I’ve seen two foreigners working “real” jobs in like 4 years, neither lasted long.

As far as #1 goes, either you have permission to work in the country or you don’t. Perhaps you can get a official looking document from the government explaining that you are legally allowed to work. If the law is unclear you will need to convince your potential employer that they would not be breaking any laws.

As far as #2 goes, perhaps you can bring someone with you can vogue for the fact that you are seriously looking for a job and that you are willing to commit to staying for at least a year if you were hired. Don’t let them brush you off just because they assume you aren’t serious.

Since they don’t know the rules anyway, why not just tell them you aren’t allowed to stay unless you have a job?

It seems that permanent resident status should be enough to convince them you’re serious. Maybe there’s another issue with your interviews. Are you enthusiastic about the places you’re interviewing?

I would like to see this

Putting this delicately… is it a racial issue, perhaps?
