I’m trying to set up a home network, and in the process I seem to accidentally have created two “workgroups” that both contain my main desktop computer. I have not added any other computers yet. I’d like to delete one of these workgroups, but an internet search has yielded no useful instructions. I’m using Windows XP Professional.
Additionally, when I open “My Network Places”, under “Local Network” I see “g on Rusalkasmaincomputer”. This disturbs me because when I click on “g” it opens my c: drive and I don’t want that shared as a network drive. I just want to share my printer attached to this desktop on the network How do I get rid of the “g” alias?
A workgroup doesn’t have any existence other than in the computers that belong to it - to get rid of one, just re-assign all computers on that workgroup to another one. I’m not sure how you have created two workgroups on a single computer, as any computer can only belong to one workgroup at one time. Did you assign the computer to two workgroups? In that case, if there are no other systems involved, the first workgroup no longer exists.
You should be able to delete the link in Local Network, just like any other shortcut.
With reference to that specific share, open Explorer, right-click C:, select Sharing, and delete the G share.
As for the second workgroup, that will disappear with time.
Thanks for your answers.
The second workgroup did disappear. The g drive is not shared, I made sure of that, but it’s still there.
I have a different problem now, in that I can see my desktop computer on the network from my laptop, but I don’t have access to the printer. It says I don’t have permission, despite the fact that I shared it. My laptop has a different userid/login than my main computer, could this be the problem?
