How do I get a copy of my criminal record?

As I’ve posted in this thread, I’m applying for teaching jobs in Korea. One of the requirements is for me to send a copy of my criminal record. In my prior places of employment, the company did this from their end, so I have no idea where to find my criminal record (or more accurately, the lack thereof).

Where would I go for this? The FBI, the local police? Any idea how long it usually takes?

Thanks.

If you commit a crime they will look it up for you for free on the spot. Thats a start. They may even give you a copy for your records.

I’ve had to do this to work overseas. You can get two types of checks, both from the local police or sheriff’s office. One is whether you have any offenses listed against your name. The other is whether you have any offenses against your fingerprints. The second type is more commonly required, but some countries only require the first kind.

I’ve never needed or gotten one of these from the FBI, but I don’t know what Korea requires. My guess is the fingerprint check by the local cops is all that is required, but check with them.

Yeah, you can get criminal record checks either from the local police or fm the FBI (and in the case of Illinois, also from teh Illinois State Police). The real question is which one Korea requires for this purpose. The FBI check will cover the entire U.S., but the local checks will only cover the specific locality, so if you’ve lived in more than one place during the period they want you to document, a single local check won’t do the trick. Also, you should check whether they just want a namecheck search, or a fingerprint-based search.
