We installed a short run of new cabinets, and now I need to install a granite (or possibly quartz solid surfacing) countertop on an 18.5" x 13.25" surface. I’m going to get the mini-slab tomorrow, and perhaps they’ll have some instructions for me, but I’m not counting on it.
So… how do I mount this thing? My base cabinet already has a solid top. Do I need to mount plywood on top before the granite? Do I just glue the granite down? With what? Liquid nails? Epoxy?
18x13 means you have nothing much to worry about. Make sure you install the cabinet level and plumb. Check for any low spots on the underside of the stone when you set it in place and shim accordingly (you probably won’t have any on a piece so small). Then just lay a bead of silicone on the cabinet, press the top in place and don’t mess with it for 3-4 hours.
If there’s cutouts, seams or anything else, there’s a lot more to do but that’s it. You have a really small piece of stone which will weight about 38 lb.
If it’s quartz, don’t put anything on it. If it’s granite or marble, use an OIL BASED sealer. Don’t use the water based crap; it’s a waste of your money.
