I was just reading the front page question on Toxoplasma gondii, the toxic cat poop protozoan. How would I know if I’m infected by it? The percentage of people that are housing something that creats cysts in their brains is freaking me out. Is there any way to get rid of it?
You can get a blood test for it; just ask your doctor. However, they often show false positives. I am trying to conceive and I asked for the test. I figured that if I already was exposed to it, I wouldn’t have to worry about contracting it while pregnant. I ended up getting tested 3 times because the first test indicated that I had a current case of toxoplasmosis. I had to wait a month, ensure I wouldn’t get pregnant, then take the test again. It came back negative. So then I had to wait another month and try again - another negative. I guess they assumed 2/3 meant that I have never been exposed to it. It was very frustrating for me to have to wait all that time when I was anxious to begin trying to conceive. Any women who think they might want to get this done, do it well in advance of planning to become pregnant!
