How do i look up a recent death notice or obituary?

Just what it says…I have an online friend who has a serious illness, and was recently hospitalized. Family was supposed to contact me with his condition, but either they are too busy or believe that I am a crazy internet stalker. So, I am trying to see if the worst has happened…I know he lives in NYC, I have his first and last names (common) and his date of birth. My google-fu is nonexistent though, so can somebody please tell me how to word this search. What I know should be enough, but I can’t seem to come upon a useful wording.

Thanks

Ancestry.com has an index called the United States Obituary Collection, which uses an automated finding and extraction system to gather data from thousands of newspaper sites. It has indexed 113,258 obituaries for the month of May 2008 alone. The most recent are from 11 May 2008.

If you want to send me a private message, I can look up the name for you.

You can also try legacy.com, which will be more current, and to which many major newspapers now subscribe. If the person has indeed passed away, you will find the funeral information so you can send a card, and a guest book so you can leave a message.

Thanks to you both, Walloon and Sigmagirl. I will try Sigmagirls suggestion fist since this would be as recent as this week. Of course, i am hoping that I am merely over-reacting. So when he reappears he will first receive virtual hugs, and then virtual smacks upside the head for worrying me so.

Thanks again!
