How Do I Love Her? I Just Found A New Way!

The sun is not my friend. I burn very easily. So, I bought a Foreign Legion style cap that covered my ears and the back of my neck. Then, I inherited anothe one. I had to throw them both out when I left my first apartment due to an infestation of toxic mold. I have been looking for a new hat since then. Last Saturday, at the Eastern State Penitentiary flea market, I found it.

At first, I just saw a black lump with scaly skin. Then, I saw that it was a hat. Then, I saw that it had horns. It turned out to be an official Disney Maleficent baseball cap. The price was right so I bought it. Later, I realized that marvellous as it was my new hat had a failing. It would not protect my ears or the back of my neck from the sun. I quickly came up with a solution. Maleficent’s colors are black, green and purple. I could attach purple fabric to the hat! I quickly settled on cuttng up a purple t-shirt I have. The fabric would protect against the sun, but be light and breathe. Sewing it to the cap would not work. Duct tape on the inside of the cap would work. But, I just didn’t like the idea. Velcro was the answer. It would keep the fabric in place, and I could detach it for washing and such. Unfortunately, I think many of my crafting supplies were thrown out when I moved, including all my velcro. There was also another obstacle.

Wearing the modified cap when by myself would not be a problem. But on most of my oudtoor activities. I am accompanied by my beloved. She actually cares what strangers think. Would she approve of my wearing my new hat in public with her?

We chat on Facebook messenger throughout the day, Monday through Friday. I told her all about my hat and my plans for it.

I love that woman. She then asked if I needed her to order velcro on Amazon. She is kind, caring and generous. She is very intelligent. She plays the keyboard and the guitar. She is a maestro in the kitchen. She is profoundly beautiful too. I have really hit the jackpot.

Awww. That was sweet of her.

Count your lucky stars and buy(pick) that girl a rose.

She is very sweet.

I buy her things all the time. It is a bit harder to buy for her because I am used to buying gifts for people I care about at flea markets and thrift stores. She is something of a germophobe and so does not trust most second hand items.

As I said, she is very musically gifted. A few minutes after seeing a theremin for the very first time, she was able to play the Star Wars theme well enough that i recognized it without her telling me what she was playing. She is learning to play the bansuri, the traditional bamboo flute. I bought a Jytmus, a brand of steel tongue drum for her at a Goodwill. As one or two of the gifts I have given her have been duds, I didn’t want to spend the money on mallets and finger picks if it turned out that she didn’t want it. She did . I have been offering to get her the drum’s accessories since Valentine’s day. Her birthday is next month. I will be including them in her birthday presents.

We are big fans of Steampunk. We go to at least one Steampunk convention each year. At the flea market on Saturday, I found a hardcover copy of The Steampunk User’s Manual. It is full of projects to make. I gave it to her this past weekend only because I was not sure if she would accept a second hand book. It is in great shape and appears to never have been read. But, she is a germophobe. I did not want to save it for her birthday and have her reject it.

She likes bunnies. Years ago, I was staying at her apartment and had brought my balloons and pump. I made her a balloon bunny. She thought it was great and said that sometime I should make more. Then, she had to leave to briefly run an errand or visit family or something. While I was alone at her apartment, I covered the couch in balloon bunnies. When she returned, she was delighted. I had forgotten about this until she recently posted a photo of the moment on Facebook. While looking for something else at CVS, I found a stuffed ballon bunny. It was the last one they had. I bought it, brought it home, and immediately sealed it in a Ziploc freezer bag. Still, she generally considers everything in my apartment unclean and mold infested. So, I was not sure she would want it. I gave that to her last weekend as well. She love it and was touched I thought to seal it in an airtight bag.

Her go to gift is See’s milk chocolate bordeaux. She has told me that she is concerned about her weight (she shoudln’t be) and does not want those for her birthday.

I am unsure what else to get her for her birthday. The Jytmus accessories are clearly not enough. After her father died, her mother started to seriously decline. Because her mother would not accept a stranger as a live in aid, my beloved moved back in to her parents’ house. Her mother hates, loathes and despises me. Besides other problems, this makes it dificult to send flowers. There are a variety of Steampunk and Renn Faire clothing items I could get her. But every time I have offered to buy her clothes in the last year, she has said ‘I need to lose twenty pounds first.’

I hope I think of something.

A very intimate gift, that is sort of clothing, are gloves.
In Victorian times is was a near marriage proposal for a man to give a woman gloves.

Maybe you can find some steampunk-y ones.

Ooh, lacy fingerless gloves sound se—xy!! (If you wanna go that way) and add a gift certificate for getting her nails done (if she likes that stuff).

Good luck.

Thanks. Any clothing from the Victorian period is very Steampunk.

She rarely paints her nails. With her fear of not just airborne germs but airborne chemicals, I cannot see her setting foot in a nail salon.

Corsets are also very steampunk. Some corsets also work at the Rennaissance Faire. We go to that every year too. But every time I have offered to buy her clothing duing the past year or so, she says she needs to lose at least twenty pounds first. I think she is very beautiful as she is. However, I long for her to reach her goal weight so I can buy her clothing again.

I hope I think of something. There is a May Fair with local vendors in my neighborhood tomorrow. Besides the food trucks (I love food trucks!) I will hunt for a gift as well.

How about shoes? Her feet are unlikely to change size from losing a smallish amount of weight. I watch a historical costumer on Youtube, and she gets her shoes from American Duchess (and makes sure to mention it in every video). They are probably horrendously expensive, but I expect there are other options for steampunk-esque shoes. Or you could get her some cool accessories/jewellery.

Does she read music? My husband plays the keyboard and likes books of sheet music as a present. Or you could get her some interesting teas/coffees if she drinks those.

I hadn’t thought of shoes. That is definitely a possibilty. It would be great to get her footwear that looks great with steampunk, Renn Faire or other outfits but has flat soles and does not pinch.

She does read music. I cannot think of a book of music that she might want that she has not already purchased over the years.

She loves tea. She has previously instructed me that she has enough cups, saucers, and tea pots.I have bought a few books on tea and tea parties. She really likes Turkish coffee. I bought her a Turkish coffee kit at the Rusian market I used to live by. A new tea would work. IIRC she does not like green tea, or any tea that is entirely herbal and does not contain tea leaves.
