How do I remove the door lock actuator on a '02 Santa Fe?

I bought the shop manual on CD, but I don’t see this covered. My wife’s 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe has weak door lock solenoids. I want to remove them and see if some silicone spray will fix the problem, or at least give me enough time to go buy new ones. Anyone know how to remove them?

The actuators are inside the doors. To get to one, remove the door trim panel. It should be fairly obvious how it’s attached (probably one or two screws). Lubricate all the lock linkage pieces that it has to move, including the latch arm. Silicone spray may be okay for the linkage, but for the latch and actuator something like WD-40 would probably work better.

Well, I got about 90% of the way - I found the screw that was holding it in place (it also holds one of the window tracks in place. But, there are two linkages that go to the outside of the door - one for the key, and one for the handle. I could disconnect the key linkage, but I can’t figure out how to disconnect the handle linkage. There is a yellow clip that unsnaps from the linkage and rotates, but I can’t force the end of the linkage out of the nylon lever arm.
Any ideas?

Once the clip is unsnapped and rotated, it should be a simple matter of pulling the linkage rod out of the hole it goes into.

I gather the clip is akin to part F in this diagram. Usually the end of the rod is bent 90’ (for its last 1/4") and goes through both the clip and the arm it attaches to. If there’s any tension on the rod, that can make it difficult. Sometimes I have to use a screwdriver to coax the rod out of its hole.

Sometimes there are two 90’ bends (like this) and it takes some wiggling to get the rod out of (or into) its hole.

This diagram isn’t exactly like our vehicle, but it’s close. I was able to unsnap the clip and remove the rod on the lock mechanism (near part J), but not the one on the handle (near part D). I’ll try again this weekend with a little more force, but I don’t want to break anything.

I also want to test the relays, since there seems to be a lot of reports of doorlock failures due to bad relays.

Thanks for your help.

I’d also check here. As a Hyundai owner, I’ve noticed that the same problems seem to crop up for particular vehicles and model years. Search the Santa Fe forum if you’re still stuck after Gary T’s help and I’d bet someone else has had to deal with the same issue.

Also, sorry to hear you paid for the manual, seeing as you can view it online here. An account is free.

Hey - thanks for the link.
I couldn’t register on Hyundai’s website in Safari, but IE worked (stupid website!). Looks like I’m going to be doing some analysis this weekend.

If the actuator clicks, its relay is working. There are two relays, apparently left side and right side.
