How Do I Safely End Processes In Task Manager?

Inspired by the CODII thread, I am wondering:

How in the hell do I get this game to run on my system on single-player mode without the incredible lag?

I have played **CODI ** without any issues at all. CODII isn’t all that new of a game, either.

It was suggested by another poster that I end all processes in task manager except for explorer.exe and some other one I’m failing to remember.

Well, I can’t do that. When I try, either a certain task is ended that forces a shutdown/reboot, or the game gets errors upon boot. There are so many processes running that I am unsure of which ones I can end safely, and I have been forced to reboot when I pick the wrong ones, or the game doesn’t work.

I have:
Windows XP Home
HP Pavilion a1230n PC
AMD 3700 processor clocked at 2.19ghz
1GB of RAM
A Radeon Express Series 200 vid card rated at 256MB
More than ample hard drive space

What gives? What do I need to do to get this friggin’ game to run properly?

I have tried lessening all the appropriate settings within the game, reducing shadows, number of corpses, textural mapping, etc, etc but it lags and runs like absolute crap.

I also have AVG anti-virus and Spysweeper, both of which I shut off before trying to run the game.

What gives? My system should be able to play this, but it’s incredibly laggy to the point where it’s completely unenjoyable.

Is there any advice out there in Doperland?

What are the processes running in the background?

This is likely your problem. It’s a 4 year old motherboard (read: slow graphics) chipset. Slow on slow - by today’s standards anyway. You really want a dedicated graphics card. Get yourself a Radeon 4850 or Radeon 4870. And your box will take 4 GB, so upgrade the memory at the same time.
