I downloaded the free “Super Collapse” game from gamehouse.com, and I have no real complaints about the game itself. It’s kinda fun, noisey and all, with little bombs and such. Problem is, when I exit the game, it takes me to their website. Every time.
I don’t blame them, After all the game was, free and they do want to sell me something. I may buy some jigsaws or something, but not now. They’re pretty expensive. :dubious:
Two questions;
Can I easily disable this wonderful “go home” feature?
And, if I do buy a game, will that game also take me for a ride every time I quit it?
Peace,
mangeorge
You can try to end it by alt+f4 key combo, or ctrl-alt-del and end that game
Forgot to mention, I’m on a mac.
It even opens my browser (safari).
Not sure of the precise details, but you should be able to put an entry in your hosts file, redirecting the URL to something, such as about:blank, but that’s still going to fire up a browser window and if you had cause to visit the website under your own steam, you’d not be able to.
Does your machine have a firewall that is configurable to the extent of controlling which applications can launch other applications? On Windows machines this is called Application Hijacking Control and it is a common feature of software firewalls; not sure if there’s an equivalent on the Mac.
I’ll have a look. Thanks.
You can try force quitting by hitting Option-Apple-Esc.
hosts should take care of it.
I wonder if Mac-heads would get offended if someone labeled that malware or spyware :dubious:
What does it do if you just disable your internet connection at the end of the game?
I can “disconnect” before playing the game, which is actually loaded onto my machine. When I exit the game, my browser opens but doesn’t connect.
I plan to email gamehouse about it. I sure don’t want this “feature” on any game I pay for.
Thanks, Evil. I’ll check it out.
BTW; I knew your brother, Knievel. ![]()
Since launching the browser does not involve the installation of concealed programs, “phoning home”, or putting hard-to-remove hooks into the operating system, I can’t see how it could be legitimately called malware/spyware on any platform.
After looking at the website and noticing that there’s a full version you pay for, I’d guess the displaying of the web page is a version of a shareware “nag screen” and that the full version of the game does not direct you to the website when you quit the game.
