I spent seven years so afraid of flying that I would literally puke before getting on an airplane. Well, I did something about and it’s not a problem for me any more. Rest assured, though, that I have a great deal of sympathy for people who find flying a problem. I am totally in favor of people seeking help to deal with such anxiety or fear, but self-medicating with, say, beer, isn’t the best method. Some people who really do get stressed out over flying but must fly anyway would probably be helped a great deal if they went to their doctor rather than continuing to endure such misery. Sure, the crying babies don’t help, but they aren’t the real problem.
If you took my posts as an attack, I’m sorry, but I feel very passionately about this issue. I suppose that’s obvious. But too often I have seen people dope up their kids to make them more manageable. I find a child throwing up because of motion sickness much more disturbing than normal fussing and crying. I find kids with glazed eyes and the enthusiasm of a zombie to be utterly creepy. If nobody here does that, that’s great, but I find it terrible that far too many adults view children as a nuisance rather than as fellow human beings.
Yes, parents should do what they can to minimize the disruption their children cause, but we all know that sometimes nothing works. Children won’t learn to behave appropriately in public if they’re never taken anywhere.
