How do I use this air pump?

Bicycle pump in question: http://www.specialized.com/ca/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=42021

I can’t believe I can’t figure this out, but I must ask for help. I purchased a bike recently, and got the above frame pump. However, I can’t seem to use it. It has two holes - one for each of the two different types of valves.

I take the cap off my tube, and insert the Shrader valve into the pump. The pump head is labeled, and the valve only fits in one side of the pump. I try to make sure the valve is inserted as much as possible.

Then comes the lever. When left in the neutral position or pointed towards the Shrader valve, pumping just results in air coming out the unused Presta hole. There is very little resistance with pumping. Pointing the lever towards the Presta hole results in air rushing out of the Presta hole very quickly, even when not pumping.

I’m sure I’m doing something silly here, but I can’t figure it out.

Firstly, are you using the frame pump as your primary pump? If so, that is not a good idea as they are not very efficient and they can damage your valve (mainly because the head is attached to the frame of the pump).

With my experience with pumps is that you have to get the valve into the pump all the way, which may be more than you expect. And then locking has to be done very tightly.

If you’re still having problems, go to the LBS where you got it and ask them to show you how to use it, or to check if its a bad pump.
