How do I wire up neon?

I’m working on a project that requires neon tubing to run inside (basically) a big arch. I have a bunch of 6’ pieces of neon, each piece has two wires coming out of each end. My supplier also gave me a bunch of single strand cable, 4 transformers, and all the mounting hardware I’ll need. Unfortunately, he has since left town and has left it up to me to do the installation.

My questions:

The transformer has two lines coming out to go “to the neon.” Do I attach those lines to the two wires coming out of the bottom of the tube, then isolate and cover the two at the top? I was told that I could chain three tubes together off one transformer. How should I go about that?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Please don’t do anything aside of calling a trained professional. The output of those transformers is in excess of 1kV. The National Electrical Code® article 600 deals with installation of electric signs and outline lighting. Methods and workmanship must adhere to this article to ensure safety, and all connectors, devices, etc. must be listed by UL for this usage-e.g. neon signage.

Seconded. Neon is some Zappy stuff and I for one wouldn’t mess with it and I’ve hot wired 240V appliances!

Thanks for the input - I knew it was “Zappy” (I like that) which is why I asked for input before I even started thinking about putzing around with it. I have found a company out here that will do it for me, so looks like we’re all good to go. Thanks again for the comments and concern for my safety.

And you call yourself a lighting tool!

Lighting = theatrical lighting. Tool = kind of a tool when it comes to things outside of standard theatrical stuff.

Neon = outside of standard theatrical stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:
