How do people keep dogs?

Dogs in college are a huge pain in the ass. You won’t be able to live in the dorms, and you will have to find a rental property in a college town that allows dogs. This is nearly impossible. I only knew one person in college who had a dog and he was friends with his landlord.

I really really wanted a dog before and during college, but with the constant moving from apartment to apartment (you never live the same place all 4 years), crazy class and going-out schedules, roommates, and landlord issues, it just wasn’t feasible.

Savannah, I hoped that most people would answer that question in spirit rather than in letter. My wording wasn’t the best, but in the context of the rest of the post I’d think it was obvious that the way you construed the question was not the way I intended for it to be.

NajaNivea, to clarify, the minor behavioral issues were unacceptable to my parents, not to me. They told me later that they were completely against her from the start because they were afraid to have a rottweiler. Stereotypes are stereotypes no matter how much you try to educate.

Thank you all who gave me good information and answers in an unscathing way. I have considered all and decided that now is indeed not a good time for a dog. Before reading this thread I thought it would be possible to go through college with a dog; I realize now that this is not the case. Thank you all for your time and replies.

At the very least, I’d say revisit the issue in a year when you have a better idea of what your college housing situation will be. There isn’t much hope of finding a pet-friendly dorm but at the college I went to, there was a lot of off-campus housing that allowed dogs (that might have been partially due to the fact that a veterinary school is a big part of the school’s claim to fame  ). Anyway good luck with school and eventually gettting a dog. I personally am waiting for the day that my own life situation allows me to get a pooch again!

I think I was a little snarky there; I apologise. I think your heart is in the right place, but it’s not the right time of your life for owning a dog. I really hope you continue to volunteer, though. You can do that while at university, too, I’m sure.

At least you’re thinking through the want, which is something a lot of people don’t do.

I think in the future, you’ll be a good owner for a lucky dog.
