How do radio stations decide......

…what songs they’re going to play the snot out of?

Another post mentions Tom Sawyer by Rush. The hard/classic rock stations play that song to death, but they never play anything from the Rush album “Grace Under Pressure” a great, but very underplayed Rush album. Why is this? Why do they play some releases over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again, for 30 years from when it was released, yet totally ignor other releases from the same artist? Any dopers in the radio business?

Well, I’m not in the biz, but I did major in Radio/TV/Film…

In the good old days, the record label would slap a couple hundred bucks on the table, hand the DJ the record, and say,“gee, ya think you could play this?” - and voila. Payola.

In the new age digital economy, the record label slaps a couple hundred thousand bucks (in the form of “promotional materials” on the table, hand the Radio Corporations’ Chief of Programming, and say,“gee, ya think you could play this?” - and voila. “Payola.”
