Is one team more blue collar? or is one of them more the manahattan team? Also has either team explored building a stadium in NYC instead of New Jersey?
I don’t think it breaks down by class as there are plenty of blue-collar fans of both teams. It is undeniable that the Giants are much more popular since they’ve been around since the 1920s and not just the 1960s.
Long Island seems to be a Jets hotbed (they trained until recently at Hofstra University) and certain parts of New Jersey. Also, Jets fans seem to be more aligned with Mets fans. Yankee/Jets fans and Mets/Giants fans are somewhat rare (but not unheard of).
I’m a Met/Giants fan, but I live in Western New York, not NYC. Although that is a pretty big part of the divide. If you live outside in Western NY, you most likely root for the Bills. But if you don’t, you’re a Giants fan. There’s basically no Jets fans up here at all. I know more Dolphins fans than I do Jets fans.
There was talk of a NYC stadium along with a bid for the Olympics (I think for 2012 or 2016) but that did not go very far. I think stadium plan died with the bid - Chicago was picked as the US city to bid for 2016 and they lost out to Rio. I believe the Jets were in on the NYC stadium plan.
Didn’t the Jets (Titans) originally play their games in a Stadium on Long Island? Shea perhaps?
Yeah the Jets played at Shea.
Upstate NY is mostly Giants over Jets which has a lot to do with the summer training camp being in Albany.
Giants played at Yankee stadium before the original Giants stadium was built in the 70s. They played at Yale for a few seasons when Yankee stadium was redone in the 70s.
So their fan base is mostly homeless?
Outside of NYC. I thought that was pretty clear. But if not then I’d guess you’re probably a Bills fan right?
There also many of us who are fans of both teams, though I am Giants-first by a country mile.
The Titans played in the Polo Grounds; by the time Shea was built, they had changed their name to the Jets.
There is a connection between Mets/Jets and Yankees/Giants in New York. Probably because of shared stadiums – the Giants played in Yankee Stadium in the 60s while the Jets were playing in the same stadiums as the Mets at the same time.
So if there is ever a Giants/Jets Superbowl, am I correct that most of NYC would fall on the Giants side and the Jets are the suburbanites?
No. The Jets would get Queens and Long Island, but everywhere else in the greater NYC area would favor Giants. (The other four boroughs, NY suburbs, Southwestern CT (me), Northeastern NJ, etc…)
The divide between Jets and Giants fans isn’t as stark as that between Yankee and Met fans, nor is there any real hostility or resentment.
Met fans would almost NEVER root for the Yankees in the World Series, and vice versa. but most Giant fans would probably pull for the Jets if they made the Super Bowl and most Jet fans would pull for the Giants.
Giant fans hate the Eagles and Redskins too much to devote too much venom to the Jets, and JEt fans probably hate the Pats far more than they do the Giants.
This is very true. As a long-suffering Jets fan, my greatest football memory features David Tyree’s helmet, not a Jet.
How do you define outside of Western, NY? I’m from Buffalo and we identified with being from (inside) Western New York and we were Bills fans.
My (Jets/Yanks) FIL says Jets fans only breed in Long Island. That said, my wife hates football and my sister-in-law is a Cowboys fan (because Tony Romo is like, sooo cute) so what does he know?
OK, I see that missing a key qualifier is messing up my meaning. What I should have wrote was:
If you live outside NYC and in Western NY, you most likely root for the Bills. But if you don’t, you’re a Giants fan.
Gotcha. And Yup.
