Criminal = stupid. There it is. You wouldn’t be busting them if they hadn’t been stupid. And they continue to be stupid by letting their mouth run without putting their pea-sized brain in gear.
A friend of mine was a police officer for many years. He loves to tell the story of a guy that they busted on a warrant and he got to transport this fine, upstanding citizen to the lockup. The entire ride downtown, the guy kept telling my friend a detailed monologue of what he had done, how much he enjoyed it, etc., etc., while my friend keeps telling him, “Dude, shut up. I don’t want to hear this shit. Wait until the detectives read you your rights and you have an attorney” and similar things. And the asshole says “Man, I know my rights - you can’t use a thing I say until I get that warning” and continues onward.
He was absolutely fucked when they played the tape from the recorder built into the car for a judge and the judge ruled that his confession was admissible.
Hey, no prob, and yeah, some people can’t just answer questions. They have to swipe at the “asker”.
Right. I remember on COPS seeing an officer sigh and say, “See? We don’t catch the smart ones. The ones that get caught are by no means rocket scientists.”
I"m sure it’s true. I just watched a First 48 where the officers prayed with the suspect and then told her the Lord would want her to just say what happened.
Just curious, but my impression is that the cops always say “it’ll go easier if you confess”, but basically from what I’ve heard, the resulting sentence has very little bearing on how cooperative the perp was. Anyone have any more specific knowledge about this?
I don’t have specific knowledge, but the police aren’t really authorized to make deals. The DA is the one who prosecutes, and it’s up to them to decide how lenient they want to go.
FWIW, it’s rare that a detective will tell a suspect outright that it’ll go easier for them if they confess. They’re usually upfront about the fact that they don’t decide the charges, the DA does, and all the police can do is tell the DA how the suspect behaved when talking to the police. The detective may appeal to the suspect’s conscience, though, and tell them they’ll sleep better if they fess up or some such.
