You use an inkjet printer like the Canon BJC 210 that uses cartridges filled with food colours. In order to avoid contamination the printer shouldn’t have been used for printing ahead of time. The images are printed on “paper” which is made of potato startch(really expensive about $75 wholesale for 50 sheets). You place the completed image on the cake where the starch dissolves into the icing and you end up with the image transferred to the cake.

Ugh…sometimes you can just get too realistic with images on food. I can’t see what sort of person would want to eat something with a near-exact copy of themselves on it, or of someone they know.
Thanks, tomndebb and Odieman. Cakes I have seen, but not all of the other stuff… I knew they used a printer, but not about the starch paper. Yum, sounds great, doesn’t it?
Wow, that’s a really neat idea actually. But, I’m thinking that after buying stiff enough paper, and tedious xactoing to get nice enough cards, it would turn out pretty expensive and time consuming. Maybe you could make them a nice personalized box with store-bought cards inside?
Another good idea for a personalized gift: Kinkos will make you a calendar out of photos you bring in. (You can either have one photo with a 12-month tear off calendar or a regular 12 page calendar with a different pic on each page…a bit pricey if memory serves, though.) If you’re handy with a printer you could probably make something like this yourself.
I’m watching another baby, 4 mo. old and dog sitting too, so for me to have one minute to myself is usually spent in the bathroom.
I know, if I were a true doper ( what does 2000 thread count mean these days anyways?) I would install a computer in the john, however, ergo and alas, this would not be prudent.
VV- As for tedious to cut out 52 cards, that I can handle. It’s mindless.
