Certainly, many Americans agree with you, that a person of property and substance, such as yourself, is entitled to rights and privileges above and beyond those accorded to riff-raff and bums. Indeed, most of the original framers of our Constitution were wholly in accord with your views. Only a very few extremists and radicals like Thomas Paine dared demand that all men truly were equal, at least in the eyes of the law.

His views are reflected in the modern day political thinker and wit Will Rogers:

“Its not a crime to be poor in America, but it may as well be.”

Back in the real world*–theFeds have filed suitto block enforcement of the Texas Voter ID law.

The relief sought by DOJ, however, is not without surprises, including asking the court to give Texas the Third World treatment. DOJ asked the federal court to block the enforcement of the Voter ID law; to rule that the Texas Voter ID law was adopted and being enforced “with the purpose of denying or abridging the right to vote on account of race, color, or membership in a language minority group” and that it “would have the result of denying or abridging the right to vote on account of race, color, or membership in a language minority group;” to bail Texas back in to preclearance under Section 3 of the Voting Rights Act; and - perhaps most shockingly - to authorize the appointment of Federal observers for elections in Texas.

Lots of legal goodies there for those who like that stuff.

• Is Texas the real world? Even here, a Felon who has completed his sentence (incarceration, parole, probation) regains the right to vote…
