Over 40 male, front right pants pocket. I agree clips are dorky. Several of the sales guys I the office use them.
In the climate around these parts I can’t keep anything in a jacket pocket, because it’s impossible to keep a jacket on. I always have to take it off (which is why I almost never wear jackets in the first place), and then I would have to worry about a rather heavy and costly item falling to the floor or pavement from elbow height, where I would have the jacket draped over an arm.
All suit and sport jackets should have an inner-inner breast pocket secured with a zippered closure, but they almost never do.
In the center console of my car. It effectively never gets used unless there’s an actual emergency.
Until I started buying them online, I found it virtually impossible to find jeans that fit properly. Either a too-large waist or too-short inseam. Since I don’t like high water pants, I erred on the waist. Which meant the belt was mandatory.
Even with correctly fitting pants, a bit of sweating will cause them to expand enough that they won’t stay up properly without a belt.
Anyway: Front left jeans pocket for me. Keys and coins in the right.

Over 40, front pants pocket with the screen facing my leg, nothing else in that pocket to scratch it or fall out from the phone getting taken out all of the time. I don’t use a case and the phone is pretty slim, so it isn’t uncomfortable whether I wear jeans or cargos. Most of my jeans will actually fit an 8" Galaxy Tab, which you wouldn’t want to walk around with, but is a good place to stash it if I need to free up a hand for a second.
I had a belt clip once back in the days of brick phones, and kept smashing it into the edges of the kitchen counters.
Under 40 and I keep it either in a pocket of my purse or in my back pocket. It’ll go in a jacket or hoodie pocket if I’m wearing a jacket or hoodie sometimes. I do have an armband for it for when I’m working out.
Under 40, I have a personal phone carrying elephant. When he isn’t available, I use my pockets.
Checkbook? Are you over one-hundred-and-forty?
Over 40. Front left jeans pocket.
